What do people think of Abdennour of Monaco as a Stones alternative? He's not long turned 26 and he's been an absolute rock for them. At 6"2 he combines pace and power very well and is ferocious in the tackle as a CB. He is also a left footed CB something which we wouldn't have when Terry retires.

Good Shout!

Agree with that shout, would also like to throw Stefan De Vrij into the ring, really good defensive player who is a real aerial threat and Lazio not getting into the CL group stages might make him available!
(Anyone see the reports linking us to the 'Chinese Sergio Ramos' Zhang Linpeng?!)

Saw that cfc, very good piece of business if he can make the matchday squad for UCL and play a big part in cup games/ friendlies. I would like to guess at the shirt sales, would legit be up there with hazard.

True plus we might unearth a gem, after all did anyone know about Azpilicueta before we signed him? Marcelo Lippi who is a decent judge of character also apparently rates him!

Shirt sales will be meaningless if not purchased through the official avenues. And I'm of the impression, most in China wouldn't be.

This is probably the thing most people bang on about, when it really has little impact on what a club generates. We just assume, a player is from a country and that country will buy lots of merchandise, so it will make the club lots of cash. When in reality people buy the shirts from sports shops etc, and the club sees nothing

Melbourne whilst what your saying makes some sort of sense that's not true at all. I don't have any figures or stats about this but raising the profile of Chelsea around the world seems to have been a massive part of what we have been doing through media and tours since RA took over. now china must have over a billion people living there, England has what 50 million? i'd be inclined to say that shirt sales from china make more money than those in the UK. yes, I agree a lot won't be purchased through an official vendor however even if 1 in 20 do they will make a hell of a lot more cash. i'd also guess that Chelsea TV will be purchased by more Asian people than European.

What you have to remember Melbourne, while that is true re. The club not getting money from shirts directly if sold through sports shops, if we suddenly sell 20 million new shirts in China, this surely must put us in a stronger position the next time out kit manufacturer (and sponsorship too, I guess?) deals are up for renegotiation.
Of course, both have been recently renegotiated, I think(?) but still worth considering.

Not quite as prolific in my posting as some of the returning people used to be, but I've been around for five or so years thought I'd post again with other returning members.

Good to see you back Rowey. I have no doubt it will have some impact on what a shirt sponsor will offer in negotiations, but if you look at the differential between club a to club b, the amounts offered do not make a huge difference to the clubs finances. We may be able to purchase a mid level player extra, once a year. It does not have a major effect.

WhoNeedsHistory - Chinas entire population won't become Chelsea supporters. Possibly one in 20 would. Probably one in 50, if we are being realistic. Of those one in 50, do you think 5% (one in 20) would pay extra to go through the official avenues, or most likely 10-20% would buy shirts from sports shops, and the vast majority would buy cheap knock offs, which still contain everything that makes it seem like an official shirt? Leaving maybe 1% or a percentage of 1% to buy through the official club shop. Then look at the Yen compared to the Pound and work out what it would cost to get a shirt. While its nice to assume their culture is in any way similar to the UK, in reality, most live on relatively low incomes. The vast majority also don't speak English. So can't see Chelsea TV making a massive impact in China.

I'm just being realistic. And when you look at clubs finances, from shirt sales, even when its an international player from a highly populated country, the impact is far from what you'd assume it to be. there's a reason Ed002 has told anyone who cared to listen, for years, that shirt sales make very little difference.

Article below shows a good indication into the difference an Asian player would make on finances. whilst not much it still helps. also, having a couple million more fans never harms.

I'm not argueing it won't help. As a said we will be able to buy a mid tier player, once a year, maybe. So the impact would be very little. And sorry mate, but an article from the daily fail, with quotes from a taxi driver, no quotes from sponsors and no official figures, as 'multi millions' isn't an actual number, does nothing to sway my opinion.

It will not add any significance to Chelsea. Add to it Park actually played a role at MU, and this Chinese bloke won't qualify for a permit, let alone get a game, if the reports of a deal are even true, and you have even less reason to believe he will add value.

I even read on WAGNH, that we can avoid the permit problems by paying a higher fee and wages. How ridiculous is that. We overpay for a player, who is nowhere near good enough, so that he is eligable to play for a team he won't be good enough to get into! Takes fantasy transfer business to a new level. Although it doesn't surprise me from that source.

Great discussion I really enjoyed reading that. I agree mostly with you Melbourne in this particular case because while every team wants to and tries to break into the Chinese market, as they are becoming the world's largest economy and boast it's largest population, you're right that we would need the right type of player, a good to great impactful player to really capitalize. However I think you underestimate a little the value of an additional even 100 million people(less than 10% of China's population) walking around in a Chelsea kit, no matter how they got it, or trying to watch a Chelsea match to see their favorite player. Again you're right that kit sales wouldn't be that significant but companies in that largely untapped market would be lining up for sponsorship and partnership deals to put Chelsea's name and logo on stuff. Chelsea's brand, worldwide status and value would increase as the club makes a lot of money off the pitch.

I don't think that language would be an issue either as I would watch Chelsea play each week on a Chinese broadcast every week, if that was my only option, with the sound off. If fact there have been quite a few away matches the last few seasons where the commentators were so biased and negative towards Chelsea, I had to mute the sound to finish watching those matches anyway lol.

29 Aug 2015 01:02:24
Once again, I think your overestimating the impact. China is far from a 'largely untapped market. Figures released suggest that upwards of 300m people in China already watch the Premier League on a consistent basis. Of those 300m its predicted around half are United supporters.

I really can't see this having a major impact on us. Would be nice if we could get Ed002 to help confirm or deny the type of impact it would have, but that seems unlikely, so I think we will have to agree to disagree and wait and see, if a Chinese player ever makes the move and gets into the team.

Ok mate I get your point and you seem to have more info on the subject than I do, good discussion though.
