I’ve been thinking, what do you think has been the reason for our decline over the last few years? We are just so inconsistent and have been since Mourinho’s final season, outside of the year we won the league (and even that adds to the inconsistency!) what is up?

Don't think it's just one reason, for me it's a mix of a number of reasons. Haven't replaced star players that have left throughout the years, haven't given managers enough time, disappointing transfer windows, managers causing issues within the team, players we've bought not living up to expectations, losing our future star players due to not suiting current systems. Personally i'd say the recruitment over the years has been our biggest issue, we've had numerous windows where we've wasted money on players that weren't needed, rarely strengthened after a successful season and just bought players for big money that never worked out.

Has to be a mentality thing. We lost our big characters, then lost other good fighters like Zouma. Conte did well for one season, but the players lost interest.

This is why it is so important we integrate CHO, RLC, Christensen, Ampadu, and James. They will see the club as something a lot bigger and personal than the likes of Jorginho, Kovacic, Higuain, Alonso.

The above is key. However, there is a problem at board level too. Really, we should have stuck to our guns and remained defense and counter attack orientated.

We have been more keen on quantity over quality unfortunately. A striker is a big miss for us. With a striker we are automatically title contenders.

Recruitment, signing back up average players rather than players who are going to push the starters for a spot, not backing world class managers and lastly luck. We’ve had a few big name signings not work out and that happens.

Would love ed001’s opinion and also Ed002.

{Ed001's Note - changing managers who need different players to suit their style but not keeping them long enough to build a squad suited to that style has not helped. You have a mish-mash squad left over, as none of them have been able to last long enough to get the team sorted out properly.}

Agree with Ed. A director of football would help s but, better scouting / signings, less change in managers, lack of a goal scorer up front. We saw the difference costa made scoring goals regularly. Hopefully things improve, transfer ban gets lifted and we can have a overhaul, tidy the books and get some these young loanees into the squad ( not starting 11 )

The thing is, a lot of us are thinking this, and have been for a few seasons now I’d wager, so how come no one at the club seems to be able to see it?
