Just wondering if someone who knows about these things, Ed or otherwise can answer this question. How early can a club tell if they have a truly special player coming through the ranks? Say for instance a club had a player who could become world class. At what age would they be able to tell typically?

{Ed002's Note - Clubs see ability in plenty of young players but that does not always translate in carrying on when they get older and discover girls, booze and psychedelic drugs.}

It was only other day I read how sir Alex was talking to Rooney and Rio and said about how ravel Morrison was so good and so much better than those two were at that age and how he was best young talent Fergie has seen. Goes to show it’s as much about attitude as talent.

I can remember a couple of lads I grew up playing football with. One went on to have a decent pro career, but he certainly wasn't the most naturally gifted. But you wouldn't see him out on a Friday / Saturday night, he was just about football.

The other lad, the most naturally gifted footballer I've played with or against by a country mile, was out drinking and partying every week.

Thankfully I was never anywhere near good enough to worry about my drinking and partying getting in the way.

Talent only opens doors for you, attitude takes you through those doors. Cheesy, but true.

The most talented player I ever played with did sign for Chelsea and then followed Dave Sexton to QPR.

He was also a qualified plumber. He decided he could enjoy football as a semi-pro, be a full time plumber and make more money.

If only I had a quarter of his talent.
