The reaction to Ben Chilwell's potential signing sums it all up really.

People are furious that we're going to sign a consistent EPL LB, and England international. Complaining about the cost like they're going to be asked to dig down the back of their sofa and contribute whatever they find.

The vast majority of them will be calling him the league's best LB the first time he assists with a cross, then lambasting him as a waste of money the next week if a winger gets past him for a goal.

We've seen it with a lot of our youngsters this year. They've gone from having a lot of potential, to being world beaters, to being inconsistent and finally never looking like they'll be good enough for Chelsea - whilst only being a couple of decent performances away from being world beaters again.

It annoys me how a lot of so called fans berate signing English players I’ve seen the same about Pope today. I’d love Pope at Chelsea.

Do they forget England have some actually quality players like Kane, Sancho, Sterling and Alexander Arnold. Not to mention upcoming quality in the likes of Saka, Rice, Foden and Greenwood. England have got a good quality team and should do very well at the Euros as long as they drop Pickford for Pope or Henderson.

It’s annoying as England have a better team than the likes of Spain and Italy currently. Only France and Germany are far superior I feel.

Saka might play for Nigeria so shouldn’t be counted just yet. I do agree that England do have quality players and successful teams in the EPL have always had English players who show the foreigners and younger ones how to fight for the team and the hustle and bustle of the league your Rooney’s, JT’s, Lamps, Rio’s, Adams, Campbell’s, etc.

That said I think it’s the price of these players that is the problem, how is Chilwell valued so high when there are easily 5 players in Europe who could arguably be better than him for cheaper. I for one would support him if and perhaps when he is one of us but no matter what I just don’t think he’s the right call, but what do I know, I’d be more than happy to eat my words. More than happy.

I get that you don't have to be English / an England fan to be a Chelsea supporter, we're a global commodity. I don't expect every fan to want an English core at Chelsea, but you're right WC68 - England did step up it's coaching and it is now reaping the benefit of quality players coming though. If Chilwell was called Chilwellifico and played for Ajax and Argentina he'd be a much more popular choice.

Dunk is another. Premier League proven, great in the air, great in the tackle, good on the ball, a captain / leader and the only reason he still plays for Brighton is that he's been very loyal to them. He ticks nearly every box we need for a CB, but a lot of fans don't want him as a Chelsea player.

J, totally agree with the first post, 100% true. Although I will hold my hands up and admit that I brought into the CHO hype and am no longer convinced!

Even if People don’t like chilwell considering the window doesn’t close until October 5th if we can finish August with Werner Ziyech Chilwell and Havertz already signed while some clubs are still trying to get their house in order it would be amazing business.

I would disagree wholeheartedly that Chilwell is looked down upon being as he’s English and would absolutely argue the opposite. He’s a young full back that clearly has developing to do, has never played in the champions league, and doesn’t have an absurd amount of caps to his name. I don’t think we’d be discussing breaking the bank for a player of that background if he wasn’t English.

BC is good but I feel we may need better.

I'd rather have the guy work on buying a new CB and GK over a LB.

First all, CFC is a club with global appeal and interest. So nationality of the playing staff should be the major factor but the quality they could bring on the pitch. After all quality wins matches and trophies and not nationality. As a result, I feel Chilwell is not the best we can get for the position at this time especially at the amount bandied. He is not significantly an upgrade on Alonso.
As for English players, yes most of them are always overhyped and overpriced. They're usually sensationalized and premium paid on their players. Stones, Wilshire, Rodwell, Barkley, Walcott, Maguire, etc. Sometimes I feel there is usually about 30m+ overvalue for English players going to big clubs.
Quality over quota/ nationality sentiments as only quality can guarantee success.
Blue for ever!
