I've a mate that is convinced we're letting Leeds do the bidding until they reach an agreement with Brighton for us to match the offer steal White from underneath their noses. I've watched a fair bit this season but I don't see what everyone else seems to see. No doubt a prospect but definitely not ready to lead our defense. I'm praying we at least try get Koulibaly, at the reported 60 million it would be a steal.

Agree0 Disagree0

I’d be happy with White tbh. Seems like he has all the basics to build on, doesn’t seem to have as many glaring weaknesses as our other current options. But the. Again I haven’t seen him that much. definitely would take him over Silva.

No doubt, I just think we need someone who's the finished article though.

Hows about White and Silva? Silva for a short term injection of experience and leadership, White for the long term?

I don't want us to go near Koulibaly. Let City have him. Spend the money on Rice.
Havertz is done so let's wrap up Rice and a LB after that.

Why would you have no interest in Koulibaly? I get him being somewhat older than our other targets but he’s the only cb in the world that is available who would gauruntee you world class play for the next 3 years at the least. I don’t get it.

{Ed001's Note - how on earth do you get that idea? World class play? He is an ageing player who relies on pace and power, both of which are likely to dwindle over the next 3 years. Especially on the back of an injury hit season, where the injuries were muscular and ones that are likely to recur.}

I have to agree with TK, he's a beast still and would 100% boss in the Premier League, I'm a strength and conditioning coach and this idea that you lose speed massively when you hit 30 is a huge misconception, you lose it if you don't use it. You just have to work harder at it and manage your load so injuries don't creep in.

Those are fair points Ed but to make a counter argument the impaired play was likely secondary to the muscular injuries and he has been an absolute monster in the 3 years proceeding the most recent one. In most positions I wouldn’t go anywhere near a 29 year old with a high price tag but I would at cb. I think a lot of this is shaped by the complete poverty of defensive ability in football at the moment. That said when our fans are seriously proposing signing Thiago Silva who is 36 and his current team is letting walk for free I think it truly speaks to the lack of good options in the market.

{Ed001's Note - I am sorry but he has not been a monster, he is massively overrated. He is one of those overly physical players who look great on highlights but are constantly out of position and so making last ditch challenges that are utterly needless if he was positioned well. Don't get me wrong, he is very good at it, but you can only do that for so long before you start to make errors. He was already showing signs of those errors a season ago, last season injuries meant he missed large portions of it, so it is difficult to judge if he was deteriorating further.

His injuries are of a type that only get worse, no idea what dadubliner is on about with 30, no one has said that, but as you get older those muscle injuries rob you of pace and power. The ones he has had are caused by his play and that becomes a mental issue, which is fine when you are 21 and have time to relearn to run freely. By the time you get to 25, let alone 29, they become a serious problem, as you have to learn over to trust your body.

I just don't see the gain in signing someone who is simply a slightly faster and much stronger Rudiger, with the same problems inherent in his game. There has to be better out there.}

£60m for a near 30 year old!? Frank would never agree to it and it's great that as a club we've moved on from buying older players for loads of money especially older players who've had injury problems the previous season (see Shevchenko; see Torres) .
