If we can't get Rice, Ampadu simply has to stay. I'd want him to stay even if we did land Rice since i really feel he could offer a lot to the team. He's definitely better in midfield but he showed tonight he's more than capable of playing both positions. Him and Kante in a double pivot with Havertz in front of them would probably be the best way forward. Ampadu can sit in front of the defence and allow Kante to do what he does best and would also give Havertz more freedom to roam forward. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with dropping Kovacic but i don't see a pivot of him and Kante working at all.

Kovacic and Kante ‘can’ be a very very good blend cos both players have the qualities that can help one to compliment the other very nicely; when you watch both players play together, you tend to observe some errors they make- for instance, when they (Kante and Kovacic) play together, you can’t tell who sits and who roams; if one drives forward, you expect the other should sit but most of the time that isn’t the case. I think the problem isn’t that they (Kante and Kovacic) cannot play with each other, the issue is coaching and conditioning them to play together. Every good midfield pair in football was worked upon by a manager eg. Lampard-Makalele, Xavi-Iniesta, Gattuso-Seedorf/ Pirlo, RoyKeane-Paul Scholes etc.

Ampadu will be loaned out this week 100%.

Sheffield United. Could be a good move for him, I'd of liked him to stay but if it helps his development that helps Chelsea.

Yeap, Ampadu off to SW. Could be a really good move for him.

@Obina:
We have seen Kante and Kova play together a lot in the past two seasons, and it doesn't work well. We are too little in the middle with both of them playing.

Ashk121; You are right we have seen Kante and Kovacic play and it doesn’t work well, but I have to say that it’s the way that it’s the way that Lampard plays them that makes them not play properly together.
If we use 4-2-3-1 formation as a case study (cos I feel Lampard employs that formation whenever he plays the both of them), Do you agree with me that Jorginho and Kovacic make a better pair in central midfield than Kante and Kovacic playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation? Why do think that is? I feel that besides the fact that last season Jorginho and Kovacic (as a midfield pair) played more games than Kante and Jorginho (as a midfield pair), It’s simply because with Jorginho, Kovacic knows that he’s roaming and Jorginho will be sitting and because their roles are clearly defined, there’s no confusion on the pitch which leads to a better output even with Jorginho being a far less DM than Kante. That being said, If Kante who is a better DM to Jorginho were to sit and Kovacic roams or vice versa, they will have a better output; instead, most of the time you see Lampard play them (Kante and Kovacic) side by side in a 4-2-3-1 formation, and consequently, you see that whenever Kante drives forward, Kovacic drives forward too which makes their play more beautiful but leaves the defence in serious harms way (which shouldn't be the case) : it's supposed to be if one goes, the other stays to protect his back.

I understand your point Obina.
Both Frank and Sarri used Kante in a more advanced role, so that's why we have seen him play more with Jorgi.
Kova is not the same as Jorgi, he is not a great passer and he doesn't have defensive attributes like Jorgi, that's why Sarri and Frank didn't use Kova as a DM whom sits in front of the defence.
It was in the later parts of the season that Lamps played Kante as a single DM, aka the Makelele role, and he was good, but not his world class self like when he played in a 2 man midfield. Perhaps that was because of his injury but I think Kante is best when he has a big guy next to him, like Matic or Pogba.
A 4231 with Rice and Kanté/ Kova at the back would be interesting and so does a 433 with Rice, Mount and Havertz. Let's see how Lamps will use his players, but in my opinion, playing Kanté and Kova at the same time, makes our defence very vulnerable.
