Ed001, with the current squad that we have, can you share your views on what formation and style of play FL n JM is looking to use.

With so much talent . I'm now perplexed on how we would set up . KH is also a doubt for me . And if we truly need him for all of our games . especially the high tempo ones

Love to hear thoughts of other posters too

Cheers and thanks in advance.

{Ed001's Note - I think, well I hope, yesterday was a one off tactical plan to deal with Liverpool. Werner on the left was there to attack the space in behind TAA and, it was hoped, take advantage of Fabinho being out of position. The rest was just about trying to soak up pressure and hit on the counter. I doubt he would have played like that if Pulisic or Ziyech were available.

From what I see of the buys, the plan seems to be to go with 3 up top and one in behind, probably a variant of 4-2-3-1. Silva has come in to add a bit of experience and knowhow to the defence. A new keeper to provide sweeping up behind the defence, so that a higher line can be maintained. One who is quick off his line, so that Silva's lack of pace is not so exposed.

The problem I see with it is that you lack a player with the quality to playmake from deep. Jorginho doesn't have the range of passing or vision to do the job, Kovacic doesn't really excel in any area and Kante lacks the range of passing too. For it to work really well, you need someone deep there who can hit the longer pass, when it is on, to the likes of Pulisic or Werner as they make runs. Silva can do it, but you need to have more than one who can do it regularly to ensure the opposition can't just close down one player and negate it as a tactic. The trio from yesterday are much happier playing 5, 10, 15 yard passes and don't really look for that longer pass often.

Other than that, you also have Havertz who can pick up the ball and run with it, or can win headers and is capable of creating something. So your front line looks fine, once they gain some experience together and if they can manage to stay fit. Though Werner really needs to work on his left foot, 3 times he passed up a chance by trying to force it onto his right and a fourth time he hit a weak shot with it.

With Kante and that front group, I am sure the plan must be to press the ball back high and put teams under pressure early. While the defence just gets into a shape marshalled by Silva, and drops off if the press is beaten, similar to how City play under Pep defensively.

It looks offensively to be closer to Liverpool's way of playing, moving the ball quickly up to the front group and not allowing opponents to get their shape back after giving up the ball. With the pace and skill up top you have, that could well be potent. If the players can work out each other's game. There were a few times that I noticed passes just being given to a teammate, rather than placed to where they want a teammate to run or onto their correct foot. A bit like the error from Kepa, if you watch, he is just playing the pass at Jorginho (I think it was Jorginho), rather than trying to put it on his stronger foot or to one side of him to allow him to move onto it. That is something that should be worked on in training, teaching players which side is a teammate's stronger side and looking to play passes into a place where that foot is taking the ball, rather than forcing him to adjust his body or attempt to control it with a weaker foot. When it goes to the weaker foot, it can take a touch or two extra to control it, slowing down the play and making it difficult to break a press or create anything.

I believe that Frank is looking for mainly quick one and two touch stuff, get it in the danger area and have people around who can maintain the pressure and stop opponents getting it clear. To do that, players will need to understand each others' games, so it will take time to come together but if you can pick up results still, despite not being at your best, then you can be in the shake up at the end of the season. This is going to be a very mixed up season, there will be players missing through virus tests and needing to self-isolate throughout the season, which can cost teams. All you need to do is hang in there and you can be a threat right at the top when things start to come together.}

IMHO our current best team, assuming no injuries, no Rice, would be this:

Mendy

Azpi | Silva | Zouma | Chilwell

|Kante | Kovacic |

Ziyech Pulisic
Havertz

Werner

The team is well balanced, with players arguably all in their favourite positions. I would choose Azpi over James because of his leadership and defensive play.

The main weakness of this team is the space in the wide areas between the 3 AM's and the fullbacks. It could become quite narrow if Ziyech and Pulisic don't get drilled to keep their boots on the touchlines. If we were to get too narrow, that would leave space to be exploited around the back, so it's reliant on Pulisic and Ziyech tracking back and communicating well with the full backs behind.

Come on dareyk, how can you start having doubts about Kai Havertz, there's still time. Don’t you recognise a good player when you see one? Please be patient.

BEST POSITIONS FOR KAI HAVERTZ:

1) 4-3-3
* Mendy;
* James, Silva, Zouma, Chilwell;
* [HAVERTZ], Kante, Kovacic (or Mount)
* Ziyech, Werner, Pulisic

2) 4-2-3-1
* Mendy;
* James, Silva, Zouma, Chilwell;
* Kante, Kovacic (or another CDM) ;
* Ziyech, [HAVERTZ], Pulisic
* Werner

3) 3-4-3
* Mendy;
* Azpilicueta, Silva, Zouma;
* James, Kante, Kovacic (or another CDM) Chilwell (or Alonso) ;
* [HAVERTZ], Werner, Pulisic

4) 4-2-4
* Mendy;
* James, Silva, Zouma, Chilwell
* Kante, Kovacic (or another CDM)
* Ziyech (or Hudson Odoi) [HAVERTZ], Werner, Pulisic
Mendy;

5) 4-4-2
* Mendy
* James, Silva, Zouma, Chilwell
* Ziyech, Kante, Kovacic (or another CDM) Pulisic.
* Werner and Kai Havertz.
etc.
A lot of formations can be drawn and he will fit into them but we know Lampard uses the first three so.
Besides formation, there are principles of play that has to be instilled into the team (esp new players) to get best maximum output; so inculcating these principles into the new players coupled with their adaptation time are factors that make our situation unique- hence the team needs a little time (especially as there was no preseason) to become very productive.

I think the majority of rival fanbase would love nothing better than to see Kai Havertz fail given that he comes with very high expectations given the class of the player. I mean I've heard fans of other clubs say his the biggest flop in terms of transfers im the league. I mean 2 games We all know that's not true and that is jealousy and envy talking. real footballing people who talk sense, i. e. ed1 will say how good KH is.

Of course there will be some Chelsea fans who will love to jump on the bandwagon too.
