Once we got this team out then I'll give until December to have a view on Lampard. We need to see improvements. Results like WBA will cut short the 3 year project in my opinion.

Top team but I would like to see mount played centrally with either kante or kova his energy in the centre along with ngolo would be good although not defensive as such but pressing and going forward rather than square or back.

Thats another good shout John. I think it should be managed game by game.
I think Lampard is being unfair on Mount, the young man is burned out. He started his chelsea career so brightly with goals and assists.

Any combo of Kante, Kovacic and Jorginho just doesn't work. I'd prefer Mount back there in some situations, alongside Kante, but we need a solid defensive option too.
Unbelievably we need to spend more money to solve this problem.

On paper there isn’t many better teams- that front 4 if it clicks has the potential to be the best in the world in my opinion. The sad truth though as J said is that despite spending over 200m we still need one or two more additions.

4321 is formation I like but we don’t have the players for it, kante yes but anyone who goes beside him it doesn’t seem to work. Kante dm with two 8’s worked v Everton end of season which was one of our best performances, until we address the need for a tough Dm we will keep chopping snd changing.

Hi CFCShak; It’s clearly the best Chelsea team on paper at the moment but the best team on paper doesn’t eventually become the best team on the field of play most of the time (there might be some one or two faces that might differ at this time even when we have a full squad to pick from), so the best team is the team with the strongest ability (that is a collection of players that are open to doing what Lampard demands) .
For that team to be the most productive team on the pitch, a lot of extra work, sacrifice and compromises have to come from the players especially in making up for the inadequacies in the squad what is most evident in the defensive midfield area and the defence. By ‘sacrifice and compromise’, I mean:
* Wingers tracking back to support the fullbacks.
* Kante stationing himself in that defensive midfield position (and not running forward like he’s used to) - to help the defence and bring the much needed stability in the midfield until Chelsea brings in a proper DM.
* Kai Havertz dropping deep occasionally to help the central defensive midfield are and playing as a winger or striker on certain occasions.
* The attacking players would need to run more than they are used to (for some time) cos they would help the midfield defend (on certain occasions) and transition into attack from the midfield most of the time (meaning the team has to be good at counter attacking) .

Any formation with Kovacic and Kanté in at the same time is an automatic failure.
Don't know why people don't get this: Kanté+Kova=disaster.

lots of people talking about shoehorning, then they say kante must play as a dm
i've said this more than once, so i'm putting it in captials now
dm has never been where kante has played, not with leicester, not with france and not with chelsea.
he has always had a cm partner. matic with us, and drinkwater. both pl winning pairs. kante is energy and breaks up the play wherever he ends up. granted, his starting position could be 10 yards back, but he's never a dm.

The problem with Kovacic and Kante playing together rests on Kante discipline to push forward or knowing when to push forward, if not they are our best pair in midfield playing as double pivot.

The problem is Kovacic. He is not physical enough and he is not a playmaker. He just runs well with the ball. No defensive or offensive ability what so ever.

Ask let's be honest, we don't have a playmaker to play alongside Kante. The best is probably Kovacic or Mount but neither are perfect. Someone like Thiago would have been excellent. Defensively good and a brilliant playmaker too.

Well yeah we don't have a playmaker but Kova at his best is not a playmaker. I truly prefer Jorgi despite his shortcomings. But we really need someone physical enough to protect the back four. We can leave the playmaking to Havertz, Hakim, Puli and Mason.

If Kante isn’t a versatile midfielder, then he shouldn’t be indispensable (or so valuable or expensive) at Chelsea or in France. Correct me if I am wrong, personally, I think versatility (which means defend/ combat, play-make, distribute and attack) gives a midfielder the most value.
I think what makes Kante special is his versatility just like Yaya Toure and Sergei Milinkovic Slavic. And being versatile means Kante can play as a defensive midfielder.
