Signing Rice allows us to play a two man central midfield. That allows Havertz to play in a genuine number ten role, where we are likely to see the best of him. It allows us to play in formations with Havertz, Ziyech, Pulisic, and Werner all in their favoured offensive positions, where we'd hopefully see the best of them along with Hudson-Odoi, Mount and Kante - as and when they play.

Having a player like Rice anchoring the midfield allows James and Chilwell to push forward more freely, whilst maintaining a solid defensive structure.

Adding Rice into our midfield will make a huge difference to the players around him. It'll improve them and we'll start to see the best of them.

Rice is a player Lampard is keen on signing. If the club sticks with Lampard, and backs him again in the market by signing Rice, then I believe he has identified a signing that will help him get the best out of his big money summer signings. I do believe the club should continue to back Lampard, I do believe we'll come out the other side of this bad patch, with both manager and players better for it in the long term. This isn't the time to hit reset, I think we need to push on with what we've built the foundations of.

I agree on Rice J. A leader and physical presence in the middle would do us the world of good. I just think he still could of already got better out of the players than he has.

I think that’s the plan as well J.

Havertz and Mount in front of Rice sounds good. Not giving Kante that job this season has always struck me as odd.

My guess is we will also have Ampadu in the squad next season as well.

Rice gives us brilliant base of 4231 With kante and rice, one presses and tackles other mobile and protects, together they both protect, havertz at 10 But in certain games when we need to work hard mount at ten, because he will work from the front and drop deeper, 4231 can change quickly to 433/ 451, my concern has always been the same, rice, English and from a rival means we pay well over the odds, kalvin Phillips would be cheaper, or camavinga I imagine for around same price but that will be a bidding war / kante replacement and also with 4231 we can bring ampadu back to swap with rice and compete in time, would give us a balance if we could offload a few of mount havertz possibly Gallagher as 10’s, kante rice ampadu dm’s, I’d re loan Gallagher and have Gilmour as option, sell kovecic Barkley jorginho RLC Michy alonso emerson rudiger.

Playing devils advocate re not getting best out of current players I'd argue that those who have played in their natural / favoured roles have performed well. The back four of James, Zouma, Silva and Chilwell have all performed at a decent level. Kante has been very good at times, as has Giroud and Abraham, whilst not an all round accomplished striker, has scored a few goals. Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi have looked good in wide positions. Werner needs a goal, but he's still contributed with assists whilst not scoring. Havertz is just going to take time, he's very young, with a big price tag, in a new country and C.V. going on. It's natural that it'd take time to settle, my only complaint is that I think Lampard has, at times, over played him. In fact as far as new signings are concerned I think Lampard could ease them in a bit more, like Klopp does, but injuries have limited his opportunities to do this.

Ed001 has touched on it, but letting Ampadu go is a strange decision. If not for anything else then to spend time with someone like Silva and learn from him.

Good posts as usual J and agree that could have been more careful easing in of 2 new signings from Bundesliga and Werner revealingly commented on difference with EPL and effectively how EPL and its defenders faster paced and harder. He began to look knackered. Have like the recent cameos Havertz has had, wheb played from start he also looked tired second half and cleay C.V. didn't help. Also agree that a player like Rice (or a mcginn type) in midfield alongside kante would help give greater control in midfield and freedom to thos in front of them.

Reckon the need for Rice or a player like him abke to give physicality some height and bite in midfield is something all on here can agree on. And Happy New Year to you all!

{Ed002's Note - As a Kante replacement?}

Kante is our best player, any signing should be made around him not instead of him. In my opinion,

{Ed002's Note - Players are pretty much transient and maybe a good enough offer will arrive from somewhere NK fancies a try.}

No would wish to see kante as part of duo anchoring midfield and would always want Kante to stay.

31 Dec 2020 11:01:56
Possibly ed, but would prefer Jorginho to move on if possible. Anyway Happy New Year to you and all other eda and thanks for all fantastic info and comments in 2020 that helped to brighten up such a hard year.

Ideally I'd like to see a Rice and Kante partnership. But Rice would partner better with our other midfielders than Kante does, and Kante isn't going to be here forever.

These are great posts on team shape and we all appear to understand what the team requires to compete for the big titles. Rice and Kante as HMs, releases the attacking full backs which in essence means from open play Chelsea have 6 attackers, throw in set plays and you can add the two CBs as potential goal scorers. With regard to letting players go I think Lamps has kept Jorginho in the shop window as there may a potential to get big money on him, it is beyond me why that should be but I do not watch of Italian football. Another discussion that is popping around is this Klopp comparison, my advice is leave it. The grass actually (is not) always greener on the other side. Lamps is dedicated to Chelsea, and imo winning one of the big ones would be so much more special. Long way to go this season and I for one can’t call it on the top 4, but one thing I do know is that Chelsea will be in there. Happy new year to all.
