A question for Ed001:

What do you think of Kanté both this season and the last one? To me it seems that he is not what Lampard wants in the midfield. He can't really link our defence to our attack and it seems to be a big problem for us in play making from open play.

{Ed001's Note - I think you have hit the nail on the head, Kante is a great player but he is not what Lampard wants, nor do you have the midfielders to team up with him to get the most from him. You need a Matic-type to hold and just give him freedom to do what he wants. Lampard wants his midfielders to follow his tactical plan, rather than play with total freedom. The modern day manager is going more and more towards American sport style coaching, with what are very like the 'plays' used in sports like basketball and American football. Pep Guardiola is particularly strong on this. The players will do practice sessions designed to enable them to just produce certain plays on the pitch on instinct.

While Kante might well be fully capable of playing the way Frank wants from a midfielder, it really is not going to get the absolute most from him. The question is whether the best thing to do is for Frank to adapt the tactics to get more from him or move on players like Kante who don't fit and then bring in players who do. With Frank very much being the prime mover behind interest in Rice, that to me would suggest he intends to alter the tactics to suit. Rice can play that Matic role.}

Really great explanation, thank you very much Ed001.

I really liked the bit about FL creating "plays" like basketball. Perhaps this would also explain why we are not as fluid as we can be at the moment.

{Ed001's Note - every team is suffering with it. The lack of time to train is why the results are so up and down. It particularly affects City's attacking play, as they usually drill that relentlessly.}

My worry is what what we’d sell kante for amd how much we’d have to pay for a replacement what’s the point, unless he wants to leave them fair enough but who has the money to pay top money for one of the best in the world. I’d prefer the rice / kante partnership and get kante back to his best, because at his best his a man who can make difference over a season,

Very interesting thread.

At the moment Matt it seems no one will be able to pay the fee that we want, also I don't think he we are going to sell him this January.
But he will be 30 next year and perhaps a less physical league would suit him better.
We have good options on loan in the midfield, perhaps they might play a role in filling his position.

I’ll be as gutted if kante left as I was when hazard left, if we replaced kante well enough then fair enough but who does a job like he does, we can’t have players built for a certain manager when the manager won’t last as long as the players,

The Kante conundrum is the one area of decision making I cannot align myself with Lamps. Playing with enthusiasm, heart and relish for the fight never goes out of fashion. Whether it’s lower league or CL champs N’Golo plays with the same commitment. It is both heartwarming and enjoyable to see him do all of this in a Chelsea shirt. With regard as to tactics and N’Golo’s role it is simple. He is a HM that scurries left right and centre to put out fires, he is the insurance policy that Chelsea rely on when the ball is lost and a counterattack is imminent. Kante dies not rely on positional sense to carry out these duties, it is his fitness and willingness to get after the ball from anywhere on the field and disrupt the counter that is his greatest quality. If Chelsea sign and play Rice he will patrol in front of the two CBs in a more traditional role. I want Chelsea to be hellish to play against these two will contribute to that immensely. One other thing re N’Golo, imo he would get a game for any team in the world. Happy new year to all you Chelsea fans out there here is to a great 2021 for everyone.

Imo losing Kante is out of it and should only look for his best partner because there are few like him. I'm with matt and Stephen especially on the fire insurance policy. It may not be so obvious in this current team set up because there's no other player with any serious defensive attribute to help him and he almost does it alone. Get Rice or another "Matic" we will be difficult to beat again and our attacking players will have a springboard to attack. Even having enough room for tactical changes and still effective.
Shouldn't lose the only truly world class player we have now in the midst of young and unproven but talented squad.
