90 million havertz, very poor season so far even ignoring the price tag. Doesn't fit into current formation or system either.

50 million Werner, terrible season, missing sitter after sitter, currently playing out of position.

50 million Ziyech, season disrupted by injuries but hasn't set the world alight and doesn't fit into current system or formation.

50 million chillwell, currently can't get a game over Alonso in a system and formation he isn't suited to.

Does this club have a plan? A director of football has been a must for 6+ years. Our recruitment, direction and idea has been awful for years. Wasted the De Bruyne/ Lukaku Salah years for one premiership, and now have outspent our means for a team that isn't suited to them players.

Come on.

{Ed0666's Note - you make salient points mate.

Exactly my thoughts and what I've been trying to say all along.

I know some of them will come good at some point or maybe not, but if your goals are to win the league and/ or CL, you got to go for more than just talent and potential. You need PL proven talent along with a few promising youngsters which we have an abundance of.

Also you forgot Pulisic that now has been out of 50% of the games since he joined and the ones he played he has been very average, just a few good game post restart last season.

This is what you get for only having an eye for the business aspect of the game rather than making a very good team.

21 Feb 2021 06:52:59
I do support the team also for the posters who are about to come at me. I just cannot understand the business strategy. Yes we've won a lot of trophies but we haven't won as much as we should have in the last decade for the amount of money we've spent. 2 premierships since 2011 is a pretty poor return imo.

Also, Ed002 told us we wouldn't sign Sancho becuase he's too expensive, but then signed Havertz for even more? It's just baffling.

{Ed001's Note - you didn't pay more for Havertz.}

I think we have a good squad to play a 433 or 4231 . The new players need time. We need a better midfield player who can control the game and help transition from the back players to the front players . With Kante alongside said player.

We will see the best of KH HZ TW towards the end of this season and the next season. TA has an eye for goal but has a lot to improve, he is 2 years or more away from the finished product, at best our second striker.

Just see city . they have an abundance of talent and need every last player to achieve every goal out there . I believe we are and will do the same . fight for all titles. Cancelo case and point

Just need time . I'm super unhappy with the way things are but am hoping that things will get better in the next few months.

CHO has to do more and I can't wait to see an inform CP.

We have TW OG TA MM CP HZ KH CHO fighting for 4 spots . Some are bound to not get selected but have to keep knocking on the door of the ones who make it . If the slip up . the next player grabs the chance.

Patience . we will challenge city to the title next year.

Seemed to me Standard that FL struggled to include all the expensive new signings having spent most of last season bringing through the youngsters. What he did was to change the formation from a back 3 that had served as well after restart to 433 to make more room for attacking signings plus Chilwell more suited to LB than Alonso who is more of a wing back.

This led to us scoring plenty of goals and lengthy unbeaten run up to December until the dried up with all of our strikers going through lean spell if most obviously werner. Jorgonho also missed several penalties and we hit tge woodwork multiple times. And we let goals in of course with Mendy wobbling now pn occasions.

So FL goes and TT goes back to back 3 to tighten defense and this works to extent that we go on another unbeaten run but creating few chances and scoring few goals. And Chilwell, Ziyech out of favour, Havertz and Pulisic not great or injured.

What next?

21 Feb 2021 11:05:26
Dareryk I think the problem fof CFC managers is that patience is in short supply but you are right that we need it. Also the case that despite all the new signings - and belief that they will adapt to EPL in time and have had to be trying to adapt in difficult C.V. circumstances - there may still be some areas of weakness in squad that still need addressing by a couple of further additions and exits.

But i have been ever hopeful. that we will be able to be chsllengers by next season.

21 Feb 2021 11:14:42
I would prefer us to play 433 because for me it’s the only way I can see us getting our more exciting players into the team.

If we do play that shape I do think we require a player like Makalele and there not easy to find.

I also understand why TT has gone with three at the back but at the moment it is not easy on the eye but results are more important than anything at this stage of the season.

21 Feb 2021 11:14:18
Oh really ed001? I know it's hard to come across good sources but I saw havertz is paid between 200-300k, whereas right now it looks like Sancho is on 100k around, so it looked like havertz was more expensive. Might be wrong though, we'll never know.

{Ed001's Note - Sancho would have cost around £200m, there was a huge fee to his agent plus he wanted massive wages. Why do you think he is still there? No one was willing to pay the money, not even Man Utd, who have spunked monster amounts on Maguire and Pogba in the past.}

21 Feb 2021 11:48:18
That does make sense. That is a ridiculous sum for a player if true.

21 Feb 2021 12:23:32
Standard, I'm sorry but I don't agree with any of your points.

Havertz has NOT had a 'very poor season'! He's hardly played and when he has he's shown touches of real class. He's a 21 year old who's moved to a new country during a lockdown C.V. - he's caught C.V. himself - he's been plagued by niggling injuries since - and he may well be suffering with the effects of Long C.V.. Next season - fingers crossed when crowds are back and we're back to some semblance of normal - that's when to judge Havertz.

Werner - much of the above re. lockdown can also be applied to Timo. And remember how he started the season - banging in goals and we were all saying what a bargain he was! And he has 10 goals in 33 appearances - not great but not bad for a 1st season. And as you say - he has been played out of position all over the place. I believe that £48m for Werner will prove to be a bargain over the coming seasons.

After Ziyech's first few games, posters were lauding him as the anointed one who'd come to bring creation back to our midfield. Again a string of niggling injuries has side-lined him and he needs a run of games. But I do agree that he doesn't fit into TT's present system. Jury's out - we'll see next season when TT will most probably change the system with his own players bought in.

Chilwell was probably our best player until his performance level suddenly dropped quite recently. Another young player adapting to a new environment in the time of C.V.. And he most certainly DOES suit the wing-back position. TT has admitted that he has gone with Alonso more to do with his height in defensive situations - this says more about our present central defenders than anything to do with Chilwell - and it's also why TT is looking to bring in central defenders in the coming summer window. I believe that Chilwell will become a Chelsea legend.

Finally - our recruitment - if it wasn't for C.V., Werner would be wearing a Liverpool shirt and Havertz would be wearing the white of Real Madrid. 2 potentially brilliant buys. Chilwell will be a Chelsea legend. Pulisic is another who has been plagued by injuries but we have seen enough to recognise his talent. Morata / Jorginho / Rudiger / even Bakayoko and Batshuyi all seemed good buys at reasonable prices at the time. Surely no one would question the Kovacic purchase. The only really questionable buys have been Kepa (which was rushed because we missed out on Alisson and Courtois had left) and Drinkwater (don't know what they were thinking with that one! ) . But Hazard / Costa / Fabregas / Luis / Luiz / Pedro / Mata / Matic / Giroud / Azpi have all been bought in the last 10 years at very reasonable prices and have been successful.

Chelsea top the league throughout Europe of profit transfers over the last 10 years which is a magnificent achievement.

So let's put a stop once and for all about how bad our recruitment and direction has been because it's fake news and isn't backed by the figures.

Ps Chelsea top the list of English clubs with 11 trophies in the last decade including 3 Premier Leagues and a Champions League - not bad for a club with bad recruitment and no direction!

21 Feb 2021 13:51:01
MDW? EH? What a load of claptrap. The recruitment since 2016 had been diabolical. The club simply can’t get rid of Jorginho, Rudiger, Alonso, and Kepa who are all sitting about Cobham stinking the place out. I’d sooner have the lesser experienced Chelsea YA players and Chelsea loanees than be forced to watch this lot who are and have been holding back the club.

21 Feb 2021 14:27:33
Stephen. It’s always easier with the benefit of hindsight regarding recruitment.

The club will try its best to minimise the risks when signify a player and I would think a lot of work and research goes on behind the scenes.

Over the last year we have tried to give chances to a lot more of academy players and that is to be applauded.

Sometimes players just don’t work out and that’s pretty much the same at most clubs.

21 Feb 2021 14:29:08
Why would the club want to get rid of three of our best players under TT?

21 Feb 2021 14:49:29
Stephen no-one is forcing you to watch- this isn’t North Korea.

21 Feb 2021 15:23:41
Point taken.

21 Feb 2021 15:40:08
Maybe we should look to having a Director of Football but TBH I’ve never really understood what the role entails.

21 Feb 2021 16:14:37
havertz has been absolutely terrible so far stop dreaming and i have nothing against the lad but im sick of hearing about he should start as an 8, 10, flase 9 . he's a long term investment and we should wait until next season before expecting to see what he has to offer and all the stuff about C.V. settling in blah blah. we've heard it all season but rn he wouldn't even start for the reserves.

i somewhat agree with the OP but we have to wait and see which players are brought in under tuchel and if they fit whatever system tuchel settles on- hard to have a plan when manager changes so often- recruitment is very short term ( we have remnants of conte/ sarri still in the squad as well as players brought to play franks style.

when you buy as many players as chelsea do to fit various managers and styles, recruitment is always likely to be inconsistent at best.

21 Feb 2021 17:29:20
Bluekaz I would say our recruitment teams objective is to find the next flashy signing and then go after it. Last summer it was Havertz and Werner and the upcoming summer it's going to be Haaland and Sancho.

Just compare our spending to City's. They have also splashed the cash massively, but they've actually made a very good and balanced team, unlike us.

21 Feb 2021 18:05:20
i agree tbh and whilst it has been successful over the past 20 years id say on the whole there's more bad signings than good so to speak, but the sheer number of signings has meant we have usually ended up with strong teams.

21 Feb 2021 18:31:12
Correct Ashk1. You are one of the few posters on this forum looking at the bigger picture. The truth is TT is coaching to keep his job guys hence the double sub malarkey of a YA player and not a cash signing to vent his frustration yesterday. He would never have done that to Werner who was dire. I mean imagine bringing on Jorginho to chase a game! That is desperate! And btw he has had an easy start to life at Chelsea wait till the next 6 games are completed I see Chelsea in a very different position to the one they are atm. Never mind that Spurs will move for Rodgers for Chelsea changing out the coach in the summer. Too many players that ain’t good enough to win the PL and it’s nothing to do with TT or Lamps.

21 Feb 2021 19:27:24
You are absolutely right Stephen.
The subs were baffling to say the least. Jorgi and HZ coming in when we are after the winning goal. The first one is a holding midfielder with very limited creativity and the other one has done absolutely nothing in the past 2 months.

The upcoming games are all the true test for this team and I expect not a lot of positivity.

Bluekaz you are right about that. We are always buying players and it's just business for us. The sheer number of players on loan indicates that we are just looking to make a profit which isn't a bad thing but to be honest it has left us with more troubles than success. It just feels wrong.

21 Feb 2021 21:24:51
I agree about the substitutions. Very odd.

21 Feb 2021 21:47:55
Stephen60 / Ashk121 - what will you have to moan about when we remain unbeaten in the next 6 games!
