Done by 2 lots of poor defending and a shocker from Mendy. That's our Champions League run over for another year.

I can't believe they put in a display against Brentford like they did and then went and did the same tonight, appalling!

They want to book their ideas up, very poor week. Securing Top 4 as soon as possible is a must now, starting with a win at the weekend.

Agree0 Disagree0

Individual errors and poor finishing tonight. Never mind. we move on. Let's hope for a miracle next week.
However on other news Bohley was there tonight. Hope he noticed we need a DM I. e RICE lol.

Miracles are not needed. We just need two goals!

Put it this way, Barcelona hit Real Madrid for 4 goals a couple of weeks ago at the Bernabéu.

The tie is not over yet, if we can play to our usual high levels and score 1st then we can turn this around! #Believe.

To be honest, while we were poor last night, I don't think it's all doom and gloom.

As has been said, individual errors with some poor defending obviously cost us.

On the flip side, Chelsea made chances too. Lukaku with a couple of bad headers Havertz caused problems. Courtois made a couple of good saves too, the James freekick and the Azpi shot.

Matter on inches is all. Granted, we'll need to be better, but really, we can't be worse!

The defense needs to tighetn up again, and that means a tighter midfield too. 7 goals conceded at home in two games v poor and not all down to Mendy, though his shocker (and Rudiger's non-tackle) at start of second half put us in deep trouble last night. Yet if Lukaku had taken the two chances he had, one quite easy, situation couold have been rescued.

Yes, not all completely lost yet, though TT says it is.

But also question of who TT picks for away game v Southampton on Saturday and what the mood in the suqad will be if a third defeat in a row?

I saw three main issues last night:
1. Their attack in having a world class striker in form, scoring opportunities that we simply would have been unable to convert.
2. Our defence in being too slow to recover when hit on the break resulting in last ditch panic defending and errors.
3. Their pressuring and aggressiveness in midfield forced our mistakes.

Can’t account for the mendy unforced error as that’s just one of those things. At times in the first half I thought we looked like we were dominating possession (especially leading up to our goal) but our slow build up play allowed them to drop in deep and get compact. Jorgi was a big culprit as whenever he got the ball he slowed the game down. Saying that, mount, pulisic, or lukaku (and Havertz with more) convert some of their early chances and it’s a different result.

Still think we can turn it around but will be difficult as they can now simply pick us off on the break again. Let’s hope it goes for us in the return leg.

TruBlu,

Your three points are well made.

1) it’s not as if Benzema should be a surprise. In fact it was him who caused loads of trouble last season.

2) I was critical of Christensen and Silva for the first two goals. On reflection the first was also a static midfield issue that didn’t pick Benzema up when he ran from deep. Also with James halfway up the pitch Christensen was always likely to get exposed.

3) We should be able to cope with most teams that press. It happens virtually every week in the Premiership.

We missed chances and some very poor defending from a very passive team performance particularly in the first half.
