We all know how long in can take for a player to settle into a team and a league. We have seen it many times, some players just hit the ground running, same take a few games and some can take a season. Of course some never make it at that particular club.

So far this season and with “maybe” one exception non of our summer signings have hit the ground running. It’s a concern but no more than that at the moment. It happens at a lot of clubs, they sign what look to be better players but the team performance drops off or shows a lack of consistency.

I’m personally a fan of doing things gradually. So, I’m always looking to keep changes to a minimum. Of course sometimes events and emotions make my preferred slow build process redundant. If that makes sense?

04 Dec 2025 08:19:49
Hopefully a transfer ban will help with that Tom and we have a settled squad fir a few seasons.

04 Dec 2025 09:43:16
Tom I'm with you on ot liking what has seemed to be a big churning turnover of players each summer window in recent times. I do think though that we have been creeping towards Vision 2030 aims of competitive - in EPL and Champions League which are the real tests - side among which some players have by now gained considerable EPL experience and benefited from confidence winning CWC win.

I think Garnacho has done pretty well for us from the off this season and Estevao has shone on quite a few occasions though possibly better off the bench in second half in EPL as I'd have liked him to be last night - with Garnacho starting on one side up front and Neto on the other as said before the game. Had thought Maresca had handled Estevao well up to and including Barcelona game but EPL different and reckon for now he may be better second half player - when physically tough CBs etc beginning to get tired and game opening up and allowing Estevao more space to work his magic in - than first half one. Also a matter of him having played whole game v Barcelona as well as half v Arsenal and he looked wired but pretty tired and frustrated last night.

Might have given Guiu a start ahead of Delap cos Guiu more mobile and perhaps with more guile in style of play. But Delap does need game time and I certainly haven't given up on him yet and he must surely get better if only again to standard he achieved at Ipswich and flashes he showed in some CWC games.

Yes after his first ten games for us I thought Morata was the real bees knees deal. But then he seemed to fall away and indeed fall down too often under tackles. I thought Drogba did ok in his first season for us and looked physically perfect for striker role and showed a fair bit of skill plus power in the air. But it did take time of course to be sure just how good and important he was for us.

04 Dec 2025 10:48:48
The last thing we need is a transfer ban Bill, that would really stop our progress. We are in desperate need of a proper 15 to 20 goal a season striker and a rock solid centre back who can play out from the back.

04 Dec 2025 11:19:49
Agreed with you RPD about CB and striker and though Sanchez much improved we could do with a quality keeper as competition. I still have the feeling at times that Sanchez not the complete article in terms of calm distribution when under pressure though his shot stopping impressive. He is also up there with best and command of area in terms of the high ball though seems to get in a flap in crowded corner or long thorw in situations which Maresca has found some solutions to by putting players out near half way line for possible break and dragging opposition CBs back out there too.

04 Dec 2025 13:01:11
RPD

I agree totally with you on the experienced CB and ST but let's be honest, no matter how many windows we have, the SD's will only raid nurseries and foreign ones at that.

04 Dec 2025 13:28:12
JBS, the Sanchez debate will just rumble on until he makes a mistake and then it will be the same old, same old. Let’s be grateful that he has improved.

I have only seen our young lad at Strasbourg a few times and he looks good, particularly with the ball at his feet. I have a feeling with him that he might stay out on loan for another season.

04 Dec 2025 14:47:08
It's about time we all got behind Sanchez, he has been very good this season.

04 Dec 2025 15:25:59
Greenaway, I couldn’t agree more but you and I both know it’s not going to happen.

At an annual Christmas ST bash there were a lot of the attendees saying he was our most improved player.

04 Dec 2025 15:43:22
I agree with both you and Greenaway Tom, i think Sanchez has improved this season.

The worry for me is that we lose Caicedo and we fall apart. I did think we would struggle without him which is why I was amazed when Hames did not play.

04 Dec 2025 16:10:54
I’m a massive fan of Caicedo and been singing his praises from day one. James is different gravy in any position he plays.

We have a squad that should be capable of coving these player losses. For that poor performance last night was about what’s between the ears! Win the individual battles and the right to play, expect aggression and a team that is prepare press hard. To me it looked as if some of our players were caught in the headlights.

04 Dec 2025 17:41:15
And that Tom is a worry that the coaches could not alter what was happening.

04 Dec 2025 18:52:05
Bill, I’m no more worried this season than last season about our coaches.

Some wanted the manager and the coaches sacked during last seasons campaign. Others wanted the SD’s sacked and one or two blamed the owners.

Very few ever admitted they were wrong but they have carried that dislike into this season. I sometimes believe that there are group of fans who just lurk, waiting for a bad team result or bad player performance just to say “I told you so. ”

If you look at other teams sites this is nothing unusual but it does my head in. We win a few games and everything is brilliant, we lose a few games and we are crap. The tw@t TV pundits are just as bad.

My opinion hasn’t changed, we have top four players and a reasonable coach. If we don’t qualify for the champions league, he may well be sacked, deemed a failure by the fans and owners. If we finish in the top four and maybe wins a pot, he will be our manager for the start of next season.

04 Dec 2025 20:29:44
He is certainly not helping himself with his tinkering, perhaps he wants to go, who knows, I still have nightmares with the way Conti engineered his way out of Chelsea with a huge payday.

04 Dec 2025 20:54:10
I would suggest we wait until the end of the season before we judge how the policy of rotation has or hasn’t worked.
Of course we have to remember the players exertions in the CWC.

04 Dec 2025 20:56:00
Tom, you are right about the lurkers who come out and post the minute we lose a game but we don't actually know if they are genuine fans or trolls who enjoy winding up other clubs fans. Likewise we have posters across all the sites who never have a good word to say about "their club".

I take the view there are all sorts of reasons people are nothing but negative and it is quite often that they have no friends or family with whom to let off steam so come on these sort of platforms as a release.

05 Dec 2025 07:42:14
I will never be convinced by Sanchez: he is nowhere near the level of keeper we need to step up a level, He has clearly been instructed to hoof the ball forward because of his weaknesses which invariably leads to us losing possession. Although Leed’s third goal was down to Tosin a decent keeper would have smothered the ball.

05 Dec 2025 11:26:54
I think Sanchez has been instructed to move the ball quicker. His long ball passing has improved and so has willingness to throw the ball as well.

I’m not convinced but I applaud his improvement.

Difficult not to be too reactionary after that performance, from which there are very few positives to take.

You know how for a long time, whoever played alongside Van Dijk, at CB for Liverpool, looked top class too, but, play them without Van Dijk and they showed their true qualities. Well, I’m not saying he’s at the same level as prime Van Dijk, but Fofana is having that impact on our CB’s, particularly Chalobah.

The difference to our defensive structure and intensity with and without Fofana is night and day. Going back to Chalobah, he’s decent enough, what a squad player he is, but, if he starts 15+ games in a season, you don’t win the title that season. Tosin isn’t up to this level, he’s too passive in possession and too passive out of possession - he waits for the game to come to him and the doesn’t positively impact it when it arrives. Acheampong is a better player.

Up front, Delap is ok, but again, if he’s starting 10-15+ games in a season, you’re not winning a title that season. The fact I question if Marc Guiu is better or not, speaks volumes for Delap’s level, and it’s not main strike in an EPL winning team.

Agree0 0Disagree

04 Dec 2025 05:49:19
J, generally I think Chalaboa has been very good this season particularly in a defence that’s continually changing, mainly through injury.

I’m not going to judge Delap until he has had a run of games. I rushed to judge both Morata and Drogba and got of those wrong.

For me last night was more about mindset. The manager has to take some responsibility along with certain players just being sloppy. Maybe some believed the hype. At the moment, to me we are an “on there day” sort of tea if that makes sense?

04 Dec 2025 06:54:52
I pretty much agree with everything you have said there J.

As soon as Tosin steps into defence we look a mess, I don't get this whole rotation policy Maresca seems to employ. The team that wins the league usually has a consistent starting 11.

Realistically are either Delap or Jao Pedro an upgrade on Nicholas Jackson?

04 Dec 2025 07:05:11
Whitey, I personally would never had let Jackson go and as things stand today neither Delap or Pedro are an upgrade but it’s early in there Chelsea careers.

04 Dec 2025 07:56:33
J, I agree with your post. One of our main problems is our defence particularly CBs but I won’t repeat myself. As for Delap and Pedro; no real surprises, I never thought they looked like players who would score 15 goals.

TBF, the main striker needs to play regularly to get his eye in and the constant rotation doesn’t help. As for Jackson, no thanks, he had his chance, he is not the answer.

04 Dec 2025 08:26:38
But not early in their football careers Tom, they both have a lot of games under their belt.

I also agree with Whitey97, I don't get the rotation system, it's like Maresca is looking to throw 3 points away every few games. Without Caicedo, he should have played James.

If players can't play 3 games a week then we should let them go and bring in players that can. There is no point in them being good if they are not available.

04 Dec 2025 09:09:00
That was a poor showing last night and maybe highlighted what Maresca said pre-season when he almost begged the sporting directors to buy him a ball carrying centre back to play out from the back when Levi got injured. Did you see how bad Badishille was trying to attempt it? he slowed everything down and all the movement going on ahead of him was lost.

Tosin was the same. It improved in the second half but the confidence was gone. ED01, are we looking at buying a CB in the January window because without Fofana we look lost back there.

{Ed001's Note - I have not heard of any in the pipeline, sorry.}

04 Dec 2025 09:51:06
Pretty spot on J though I do think TC very decent old style CB when playing alongside either LC last season or Fofana this season.

As have posted above Tom I got Morata wrong but was at least v hopeful for Drogba in is first season when I think he scored onlly ten or eleven EPL gaols - as did Jackson! Like many others I could not see why on eartn we loaned out Jackson for this season if not bringing in another striker though I suppose the Delap injury came quyite late in the transfer window and fater we'd done the deal with Bayern. Jaoa Pedro looks to have skill and may do well for us in certain games but perhaps not mid-winter away games up north. Delap must surely get better and Guiu imho deserved mor game time last night and especially after that brilliant assist for our second goal v Burnley. Would have had him on for JP much earlier.

04 Dec 2025 11:48:35
Bill, Cucarella had lots of games under his belt but it took him a season to settle. Although some of us had belief in Neto he is far more of an all round performer than he was last season.
It’s not a one size fits all situation.

03 Dec 2025 22:25:29
A mate just messaged me to say we are four points worse off after 14 games compared to last season. If I remember correctly the last few Decembers have been a nightmare.

Agree0 0Disagree

03 Dec 2025 22:34:22
I posted about this a while ago Tom but it hasn't come up on site. But yes your nate is correct and last season wecwon our next two games ie games 15 and 16 but will we this season? I think. they are Bournemouth and Newcastle but haven't checked again.

Caicedo red ca4d suspension could be v costly. Anyway said id stick with 3rd to 7th prediction and again question of whether we need another quality CB plus up and running prolific number 9 is raised by defeat.

04 Dec 2025 05:52:55
JBS, confidence is a very fragile thing. It can be easily shattered and then take ages to get back. For me, moments like this define managers, players, fans and seasons.

04 Dec 2025 08:27:46
It certainly defines coaches Tom.

04 Dec 2025 09:57:10
Completely agree about confidence being key Tom and that sporting suc cess is as much about mental strength as physical ability.

Maresca must take some considerable blame for last night's fiasco ajust as he rightfully took plaudits for Barcelona win and AFC fighting draw. But worrying that he has not got on top of our discipline red card rash of dismissals that has cost us dearly with loss of Caicedo for three games plus other EPL points already including - quite probably - against Arsenal. Of course Maresca has been sent odd himself plus yellow carded yet seems so calm in interviews and has seemed to be learning as a manager in other respects - though looked foolish in seletions and tactics and some substitutions/timing last night.

04 Dec 2025 11:53:17
We have to give some credit to Leeds. It was never going to be an easy fixture, very few premiership games are easy.

They win the important battles and made it difficult for us with there press. We looked soft, lacking in concentration and in some cases we displayed a poor attitude.

The manager and players have to take responsibility for success and failure.

04 Dec 2025 13:07:22
What i don't get Tom, nobody but nobody changed the way we played it was obvious to man and boy, it was not working.

That in its self should be a concern and if it keeps happening against flower teams, Maresca won't be here passed the summer.

04 Dec 2025 13:08:08
Delap isn’t as good as Jackson, Joao Pedro isn’t really a fair comparison as he’s a very different player. I don’t expect him to get 15-20 goals in a season, he is a bit of a Swiss Army knife player in the attacking half a role that he’s done pretty well for us. Delap is brand new, his start has been impacted by injury and a suspension, but, it’s a harsh world at the top level, you don’t get time to settle in. Emegha is already there, waiting in the wings, for next season and we will be linked to other strikers. Delap is already playing for his Chelsea future.

To be fair, we’re playing a game every three days for the next month or so, Maresca has to rotate. Fofana and James can’t play at that rate, not with their injuries. CB is an issue though, if Fofana and Colwill could start 80-90% of our games, as a partnership, we would be genuinely challenging. But, we’re going to see Fofana’s mins managed and it’ll be the same for Colwill when he returns. I really like Acheampong and Badiashille has played decent games, as has Chalobah. Personally, I’d play Disasi over Tosin. The guys a French international, sat in our reserves, whilst we play Tosin who might have a better eye for a pass, but is so passive in his defensive work it’s cost us goals and loses this season.

Bottom line, we need to find one more high quality CB.

04 Dec 2025 14:34:45
Bill, I’m sorry mate but we did change tactics in the second half with both CB’s going man to man with our FB’ s pushing on. Most men and the re dog would have noticed that. Maresca being here next season will be decided at the end of this season, not now!

“J” we have signed a lot of players over the last few years but if Disasi is an answer to our CB so called problems then we should all give up hope. Besides thumping his own chest, he offers zero in my opinion.

I would sell Tosin and Badiashile (shame) and buy the lad from Forest but that ain’t going to happen until the summer or unless the club feels it will get a transfer ban for the previous misdemeanours of RA.

04 Dec 2025 14:53:31
Bill, I was there and it was clear as daylight that Maresca changed tactics in the 2nd half. Maybe it didn't come across on your TV.
J, I agree with your post and would play Josh as back up to Fofana, Levi and Trev. As you correctly say we need a CB and a top level striker.

03 Dec 2025 15:05:42
Very sad news that the brilliant Marvin Hinton has passed away.

He was a very good “football” playing centre half, quick and good with both feet. If I remember correctly he was in the initial 1966 World Cup winning squad and was seen by many as the natural back up to the legendary Bobby Moore.

RIP Marvin.

An away game at “dirty” Leeds under lights isn’t a match to generally look forward to.

I assume the manager will make several changes. I can’t see James or Fofana playing and obviously there will be no Caicedo.

I personally would also rest Cucarella and Neto.

Anyway, COME ON MY MIGHTY BLUES.

Tom

I think it's the ideal game for CC.

02 Dec 2025 14:52:22
Who is CC Bill? Sorry if I'm being dim but couldn't work out as the initials didn't seem to fit a CFC squad member.

{Ed001's Note - I am so glad you said that as I couldn't think who he meant either and didn't want to say anything in case I was just being dumb.}

02 Dec 2025 14:56:18
Thanks Ed001!

02 Dec 2025 15:05:54
I assumed it was Cucarella.

02 Dec 2025 16:15:20
Tough team to pick

I would go

Sanchez

Gusto, Trev Badiashille, Cucurella

Fernandes Santos Palmer

Estevao Gittens

Delap.

02 Dec 2025 17:41:16
Tom. the pendulum has swung; no longer dirty Leeds who are 6th in the Fair Play table and unsurprisingly we are bottom. So the Leeds fans could justifiably say they are playing “ Dirty Chelsea”.
I I think it has been stated that Reece won’t be playing but I wouldn’t be making too many changes: we need 3 points.

02 Dec 2025 18:49:23
I’m sorry, as far as I’m concerned they will always be “dirty Leeds. ”.

03 Dec 2025 09:00:42
Sorry Tom, we are the dirtiest side in the prem so far this season, cards show that to be the case.

Your assumption is correct CC was Cucurella as per your recent post Tom outline who you thought should be rested, it could only have been him. At least Caicedo can get a rest now for the next three games as well although I feel we will falter during his absence.

03 Dec 2025 13:05:48
Bill, the term to describe Leeds FC “dirty Leeds” goes back decades and has zero to do with there present day disciplinary record.

As for us having yellow and red cards this season. It’s not something I’m happy about but I wouldn’t have a clue if those cards are a true indication of Chelsea being “dirty” this season.

I assume there are stats that show the team that has committed the most fouls so far this season. Without checking I would look at managers who use the tactic of consistent fouls as a way to break up play as top of any foul league.

03 Dec 2025 13:09:50
I’m sorry, I should have added that I would be astonished if both Newcastle and the spuds haven’t committed more fouls than us this season as both managers in my opinion use fouling as a tactic.

03 Dec 2025 17:30:09
Tom

If that is the case, why do we have double the cards other teams have so far this season.

I get the term dirty Leeds goes back over generations, you only have to look at the 70 cup final and replay when the cat ( ED001 this is Peter Binetti just to clarify) got injure and had to hobble on on one leg for the vast majority of the replay.

{Ed001's Note - thanks Bill, before my time so I needed that clarified.}

03 Dec 2025 19:00:22
Bill, because cards reflect an incident not the “amount” of fouls a team committed. As I say I would be astonished if we’re top of the table of “fouls committed” and I would have a substantial wager that both Newcastle and the suds have committed more fouls so far this season.

I think both managers of those teams use the tactic of tag team fouls to break up play.

03 Dec 2025 20:08:55
Tom, presumably you can cite a fouls committed stat to support your argument.

03 Dec 2025 20:23:40
I don’t often look at stats but I’m sure a poster who does will let us all know. I repeat I would astonished if we are top of the fouls committed league and would be equally surprised if both Newcastle and the spuds were not above us in any such league.

03 Dec 2025 21:42:18
I geeky mate tells me that three teams are miles in front in the league on fouls committed. They are Wolves, Bournemouth and Fulham.

04 Dec 2025 08:30:17
So we are fourth for disciplinary issues Tom, that's ok then.

04 Dec 2025 11:58:37
Bill, I think he said we are 7th in the fouls table but the three teams mentioned are a long way in front of every other team.

To be honest he also said it was a stat that has been looked at with an understanding of who the team’s opponents have been.

He also confirmed that cards, yellow or red, are obviously not necessarily a measurement of fouls.

04 Dec 2025 13:32:32
As I said in a previous post he told me we are 7th in the fouls league.

01 Dec 2025 16:00:07
Good day everyone, don't clubs have a say on the referee that officiate their matches? This is because Anthony Taylor has been controversial in all the games he had officiated that involves Chelsea.

He was petitioned at the time, but nothing happened and he has continued to do same. On all our games with him he always issued a red card against us or taken wrong decision against Chelsea and nobody is saying anything. I will no longer be watching a game where he officiate involving Chelsea anymore.

Agree0 0Disagree

01 Dec 2025 20:43:18
It was a red card so we can't judge him on this one.

But yes in the past he has made some howlers.

02 Dec 2025 08:05:17
If that elbow in the face was by a Chelsea player, he would have been sent off and subsequently transferred to Bayern.

02 Dec 2025 08:39:37
As far as I know I do t think clubs do have a say in who officiates there games.

On this occasion it was a red card but I personally would be more than happy if I never saw him refereeing another Chelsea game but that ain’t going to happen.

02 Dec 2025 16:20:05
Don't necessarily think he is biased against Chelsea but a poor referee, The red card is given 8 times out of 10 in my opinion what didn't help Cacaido was his poor attempt to pretend he was injured they all make mistakes, but with Michael Oliver at least they are mistakes I understand.

03 Dec 2025 07:14:46
seymns, I have never bought into the idea that referees are biased against Chelsea; some are better than others and all make mistakes. As for Taylor on Sunday; we received 1 red and 1 yellow both deserved: Arsenal got 6 yellows.

01 Dec 2025 13:05:17
It is starting to look like we are coming of age, a few leaders are emerging on the pitch, a desire to fight and work hard for each other and the formation of a strong core.
Sanchez is really looking like a quality keeper and Fofana makes a huge difference when he plays, Moises, James and Enzo in the middle and the likes of Cucu popping up everywhere together with an abundance of attacking and creative talent, we just need Delap or Guiu or Joao Pedro to step up and the core is complete. Maresca needed backing and patience was needed from us fans and I have to admit the club have just about got the recruitment and process right.

Maresca appears to finally understand what it means to manage a top club and he's doing things right, consistently. That doesn't mean he will get every decision spot on, no manager does, but he is learning, adapting and improving. The big test now to continue this journey and upward trajectory is to beat the likes of Leeds on wednesday without our star midfielder on a cold and wet night with a crazy KO time of 8.15pm. The premier league again giving no thought whatsoever to us match going fans!

Agree0 0Disagree

02 Dec 2025 14:54:08
All persuasively well put Greenaway.

01 Dec 2025 07:48:17
Like most fans my player of the season so far would be Caicedo. Alongside him there have also been some very good steady performances from the likes of Cucarella, Chalaboa, James, Sanchez and Neto but I’ve also been generally very impressed with Enzo. He finished off last season very well having played many games with an injury. He started this season poorly but in the last 8 games, playing further forward, he has been absolutely brilliant.

With Caicedo now being out for the next three Premiership games him and Santos have to step up again. I assume Palmer will also be back.

Agree0 0Disagree

01 Dec 2025 08:51:07
Tomb i love enzo. His fight is something I love the most. Did anyone see him giving noni it yesterday.

But him and caicedo are 2 of the best midfielders in the league. Enzo getting goals and caicedo destroying everything in his path. It was a red yesterday but how many times over the last year has he made crunching tackles that wasnt a red. Audit will be pundits saying the hype of the head to head with rice went to his head.

I just think they wanted that aggression for the London derby. That everyone spoke about after the game and his went slightly too much.

01 Dec 2025 09:40:47
Enzo is a wonderful player Tom and very underated, will he drop back alongside James whilst Caicedo serves his 3 match ban or will he stay higher up the pitch and Santos plays alongside James? Or will Essugo be ready? On the subject of key players for us this season it was great to hear the Sanchez song being sung, a sure sign he now has the backing of the matchday crowd, he must be the most improved player in our squad since last February.

01 Dec 2025 09:41:05
Agree with all in both posts. At the end oif the match yesterday I was relieved that we didn't lose but still annoyed that by going down to ten men we made getting a win so difficult and yet still scored first against the odds. Thing is that if Caicedo not sent off we lookde as though we were likely to win it given we were dominating game and creating more chance. Also Arsenal central defense without both Saliba and Gabriel looked far more vulnerable than with them. Perhaps Estevao just a bit too wired for this game and snapped at his shot to pit us one up quite early.

may have been better starting with Garnacho and to have had him coming off the bench for this one given he played whole game v Barca. but then he was so magnificent in that game so starting him seemed a no brainer. It made sense to bring on a target man to give us an out ball in second half but did wonder whether Guiu may have been a better bet than Delap as perhaps more mobile/quicker on the break yet still a handful.

01 Dec 2025 09:43:41
Still frustrated about yesterday, I believe we would have won the game with 11 men but who knows. We have 4 red cards in the PL already a number of clubs have none including Arsenal, City and Liverpool.

Personally, I think this needs to be addressed. On a separate note, I think Saka is the most overrated player in the PL.
Hopefully we can get a win on Wednesday and keep the chase up.

01 Dec 2025 10:11:42
Yes discipline has been a problem Jimbo and I think that apart from the four reds (and 24 yellows? ) in the EPL thus far we have picked up another two or three in cup games.

Saka did produce that pinpoint cross for Arsenal's equaliser but Cucu certainly did a good job on him yesterday. I would rate him pretty highly but perhaps you reckon some rate him too highly?

Yes winning against lowly Leeds on Wednesday is crucial to keep up positive momentum. I see that after 13 EPL games last season we had 25 points - ie one more than this season - but were also placed 3rd. We then went on though to win the the next three games. Now that would be good to do this seasion but we will have to do it without Caicedo now of course. Though I think he might well have been rested against Leeds as he was v Burnley and we just have to hope that Santos will play as well as he did against Burnley for us on Wednesday assuming he is the replacemebt wich surely he should be. Potentially a nice little run of starts for him in absence of Lavia and Essuego. Would also hope Guiu gets some game time too though Delap likely to start ahead of him presumably.

Greenaway, watching the game on TV meant that I was not aware of our fans singing Sanchez songs. He made a couple of fantastic saves yesterday and his distribution has certainly improved but such is the nature of us fickle fans that it will only take one mistake for the questions about his ability to start again.

His performances over last 20-25 games will be quickly forgotten.
