Simon Johnson reports that we are still in for another holding mid and that Lamps doesn't see Kanté as a #6 and that Rice is our main target.

Adding anyone that complements our midfield is a must in my opinion, be it Rice or anyone else. But my question is: is it really good to play Kanté so high up the pitch? He is not a #8.

Agree0 Disagree0

Kante needs to have a partner beside him. He is at his best when he can press and break forward and cover ground with someone who is mobile enough behind him to sit and cover, 4231 looks to be ideal for us, Lampard seems to be 433 or 343 playing players out of position to get them in. Remember the abuse Sarri got for where he played kante,

21 Sep 2020 10:13:22
Yeah, it's true that he doesn't offer goals of key passes, but I think the thing that Kante has that Frank loves is his workrate and uncannot ability to intercept passes and make key tackles. If you imagine that being done further up the pitch as part of a press, it will put pressure on ball playing defenses and hopefully cause a bunch of problems for teams. And unlike some other players, he has the engine to do that all game.

21 Sep 2020 10:15:29
Sarri and Lamps obviously believe he is better as a box to box midfield player.

21 Sep 2020 10:27:54
I just don't understand why we don't play Kante where Kante plays best, in front of the back 4 in a holding midfield role. Jorginho hasn't got the legs to play that role, players just waltz around him and then they're free to attack our CBs.

We saw once in yesterdays game when Kante broke into the box, most midfielders would have had a crack at goal. But Kante just isn't comfortable enough, so why even let him venture forward? Because, and I don't want this to sound harsh but Kante is useless around the oppositions penalty box.

Kante is the best out there at what he does, but the position we play him is just pointless as he doesn't offer anything going forward.

Even if we don't play Jorginho, Frank will still more often than not play Kovacic in the deeper role over Kante.

It all just boggles my mind!

Our need for a solid DM clearly can’t be over emphasised.

21 Sep 2020 10:51:39
I agree that the best position for Kanté is a 2 man pivot. We don't have that at the moment so for the next game I say let's play him as a #6 and see what he does.

21 Sep 2020 11:34:51
I think there is a massive over reaction to the loss vs Liverpool where we played with 10 men.

If we buy a DM then that was the plan prior to Liverpool. 100% fact that yday's game had no bearings.

We held our own until the sending off. It changed everything.

21 Sep 2020 12:18:37
I agree Shak. We were well in the game until the sending off.

21 Sep 2020 13:22:03
I think any over reactions are brought about because of expectations.
IMO judgements should be made when we have our best team on the pitch on a regular basis.

21 Sep 2020 14:29:37
Absolutely CFCShack. Our midfield was imbalanced since 2 years ago. We haven't addressed it yet but I believe it will be sorted sooner or later. I think we just need to find the right formation with the players we have until we sell a few players and buy a new DM.

21 Sep 2020 15:09:19
The ‘imbalance’ started right after Matic joined Manchester United.

21 Sep 2020 16:28:54
Obinna, Matic had a complete shocker the season before he was sold.

We got a good price for a player who was producing zero at our club and has hardly pulled up trees at Surrey Utd.

21 Sep 2020 18:08:17
I don’t understand managers doubting Kante, Kovacic is so much better going forward.
Lamps needs to get his head out his ass. Playing a havertz new to the league out of position on his first two games is a joke. I’m not impressed with his management so far this season! At all.

21 Sep 2020 18:44:33
A very unfortunate position for his head to be in.

I’m not a fan of the so called false nine. If nothing else it just sends out a message that you are interested in sitting back to hit teams on the counter. We should be better than that.

21 Sep 2020 19:19:58
@Obinna: I agree with you, but Matic was doing poorly and it was the right time to move on from him and we got a pretty good price. But we haven't been able to replace him properly.
I am not convinced with Kova at all! He is medicore in my opinion. We wouldn't have signed him if there wasn't any ban.

21 Sep 2020 19:39:04
Matic won league with us and then replaced by Bakyoko, we then went and finished 5th. It’s about balance, kante could press all over and knew matic was behind him. It was right time to sell matic but we Didn’t replace him, same with matic / Fabregas, matic would be the cover for when cesc was helping In attack and playing that final ball amd getting high assists. Again we had balance, now we have kante who still does his job but kovecic and Jorginho other nothing in actual play.

21 Sep 2020 20:09:51
Matt, if you went back and looked at Matic in his last season, you will see how many goals came from the left side in particular between the CH and LB. Hie was excellent in our Premiership winning season and as a natural left footer he did give the team some balance.

I do agree with you and Obinna that he hasn’t really been replaced but for me he was past his best. I was ok with him leaving.

22 Sep 2020 08:51:08
Do people still think Kante ever played the "Makelele" role?

Kante has never just sit in front of a back 4!

{Ed001's Note - I have given up on explaining that one dihanio, it never seems to go in.}

22 Sep 2020 09:40:05
Ed001, for me matic played that role and allowed kante to roam freely to press and break-up play. Kovacic is not that type of player. He is a different midfielder but I belive Gilmour is better suited to the role he plays ( Modric type of role) . Kante is more close to essien from our past and I see both are close in terms of the play. Problem now is we have jorginho and kova who needs to be moved on and i don't see that happening in the current market. Both are little one dimensional players and jorginho speed is a concern in epl. Kova is better player of removing the press. But we need to think about balance which means he has to be sold for a dm who can complement kante/ Gilmour depending on who plays in the match. For creativity in mf needed havertz / mount/ rlc o be there. Unfortunately rlc does not seems to have full fitness for longer periods which means it's bet havertz / mount for rotation. Ampadu for me is the dm we are looking for and would have complemented the squad well. Unfortunately he is out on loan and that means we still need to look for a dm ( read rice) this window which frankly baffles me as we had that player on hand. Depending on the match on hand we need to choose 2 mf between a dm and kante/ Gilmour. Kova can be retained till Gilmour is back and to be sold in Jan. We need a dm who can sit in front of defence. Hope we sort this in this window. Also we still need a back up rw (perisic) as gk seems sorted now.

{Ed001's Note - I agree completely on Kante/Kovacic/Gilmour points. I also fully agree that it was a mistake to send Ampadu out on loan rather than giving him the chance to nail down the holding role this season. He will be great for Sheff Utd but he was needed for Chelsea and it is an odd decision not to put him in the line up.}

22 Sep 2020 14:48:39
TomB; I don’t remember Matic being poor in the season when we won the league under Antonio Conte. If Matic was poor in that season like you said, how come Chelsea won the league with Kante and Matic partnership in the midfield (playing 3-4-3 formation)?
The only season that Matic’s performance dropped off was in Jose Mourinho’s third season (when Chelsea did badly in the league and Mourinho was sacked after Leceister game) - I remember the entire team was poor that year, it wasn’t just Matic.

22 Sep 2020 14:54:45
Does the manager know what style and formation he wants to play because until he does we are likely to get a somewhat haphazard approach to signings?
The apparent interest in Rice is puzzling particularly as we have a player in Ampadu who can play both DM and CB like Rice already available albeit lacking game time.
Whilst I think Havertz is a very talented kid he does need to be played more centrally and not as a quasi target man as against the scousers.
Finding a way of integrating the talent we have is a real challenge and something an experienced manager might struggle with.
But more critical is shape and tactics and ultimately the identity of the side moving forward because without that clear vision it could quickly become a mess.
It has a bit of a Ranieri feel about it currently and as we know it took Jose to come in with a clear vision and a winning mentality to achieve anything.

23 Sep 2020 06:35:23
Obinna, if I remember correctly Matić played over 30 games in his last season for us.

IMO he didn’t play well and deserved to be sold. He probably wanted to go to Utd anyway.

I’m not sure what us winning the Premiership has got to with it.

23 Sep 2020 06:43:19
Obinna, I’m sorry I’m getting my seasons all mixed. Anyway, I still think he deserved to be sold.

23 Sep 2020 08:25:34
C'mon guys (and girls) Let's try and get things in perpective, Gilmour looked great in 2 (yes 2) performances ( don't get me wrong, I think he is the real thing given time), However FL has to work with what works best in a "team formation" Given whichever formation we are playing. Against the lesser teams (who tend to sit back) Jurginho certainly tends to dictate play with a forward momentum which is great, however against a pressing team he gets put under a lot of pressure (due to his lack of speed) and we suffer.
It's early days yet, let's let FL sort things out (I seriously rate this guys intelligence) whilst dealing with players expectations. I am seriously concerned (Given comments on here and especially from ED 002) that CHO is just maybe not going to cut it at Chelsea with his attitude.
We did however get caught on the hop against Liverpool, after the sending off, but to be realistic, what team could compete against the present liverpool team with 10 men.
I feel we will improve immensely during this year and next year we will be right in contention for everything.
Just a little patience needed people, there is a dynasty building!
