Matt Law states that we may turn attention to Thomas Partey if Rice is unattainable but all depends on outgoings. Would be easier as I think he has a 45m release clause apparently.

Would be the type of combative midfielder we need good on the ball also.

From what i've seen he still isn't a proper holding DM and has a similar role to Kante but he's definitely miles better than Jorginho and Kova in the defensive 3rd and is much better at passing between the lines. 4231 with Kante and Partey at the pivot would improve our midfield massively. Still, would be surprised if he didn't end up at Arsenal but with that release clause we could easily swoop in and get it done very quickly. Would be funny if we somehow ended up getting Partey and we loaned Jorginho to Arsenal. Won't happen though.

Is partey a Dm / Holding midfielder,

03 Oct 2020 07:22:05
I agree with you both that he isn’t a proper holding midfielder but I still think he’d be a good option to replace Jorginho.

Yes he’s a bit like Yaya Toure, he can play DM well and play the Kante role too. He’s a very good player, better than any defensive midfielder in all top 6 English teams. I wonder why Chelsea haven’t looked at him before now cos he will suit Chelsea well.

I don’t think Partey is our first choice and think this game is about West Ham needing money to get 2 or 3 players and using the money from the sale of Rice.

Of course this is just my theory and my guess is all will become much clearer in the next few hours!

Getting Rice will be difficult, but I think we are going to at least try with a bid, which we haven't still made (per Ed002).
Ed002 said our alternative to Rice is Max Bird so not sure what to make of this news.
Also, Romano said that Atleti thinks Partey will stay with them this season and that Arsenal won't be able to pay them the release clause.

03 Oct 2020 09:46:32
Besides Ed002 saying (way before now) that Chelsea aren’t interested in Thomas Partey, I feel his age (of 27 years) could be a stumbling block to any move for him by Chelsea, he’s a good player but I don’t see Chelsea paying £45m for him at 27years of age (in this financial climate) unless the club has other things up its sleeves, Personally, I feel Chelsea doesn’t see Max Bird as good enough ‘for now’; I still think it will be Declan Rice.
I think paying £60m for Rice (21years) is better than paying £45m for Partey (27 years) .

{Ed001's Note - people seem to be forgetting about wages as well. Partey's are on a whole different level to Rice's.}

This is my conspiracy theory (I must be bored) . We will make our bid for Rice In the next few hours.

West Ham will except our offer because they want two or three players in this window.

The Partey story is just a way of pushing West Ham to except our offer for Rice.

I was thought in secondary school Economics that: Availability of Close substitute of a product reduces the demand for that product which eventually forces down the price, fingers crossed.

Blimey Obinna, that was some school you went to.

03 Oct 2020 11:17:13
Sorry Ed001; I don’t understand what you mean by Partey is on a whole different level to Rice in terms of wages: Are you saying that Partey earns or will earn more than Rice, or is the other way round. Please enlighten me.

{Ed001's Note - well if Rice got a big pay rise he would be on £100k, whereas Partey would have to cut his pay by more than half to be on £100k.}

03 Oct 2020 11:27:23
Thanks- got it.

{Ed001's Note - welcome.}

Well havertz was on around 50-100 K at Leverkusen and he's not on 300k+ for Chelsea which is ridiculous. Havertz would have been cheaper.

04 Oct 2020 13:18:35
I don’t think it’s true that Havertz is on ~300,000/ week at Chelsea.

Fabinho is the best true defensive midfielder in the game and he plays for pool. In the main though, I would agree that partey’s biggest asset is his immediate availability via his release clause.
