If we are to appoint Alonso as he's available, should we do it before the end of the season?
Got the cup final and he would have a chance to work with the players before season's end and also judge their mood.

Hi guys, quick one if you could choose one what would it be.
Arsenal win PL or CL, Spurs go down
Arsenal win nothing, Spurs stay up
Also for what it's worth I want Alonso to be our manger, but unfortunately I don't think he could work with our current set up.
30 Apr 2026 09:46:10
Arsenal win something, Spurs go down.
I don't think Alonso could work with our players. Also, I want somebody who will play with intensity, not pass, pass, lose the ball, and the opposition scores.
30 Apr 2026 10:13:59
I actually don't mind the Gooners winning the Premiership, but I definitely do not want them to win the Champions League. The Spuds to go down would be brilliant, but the happy Hammers going down wouldn't be far behind.
I have no massive issue with Alonso becoming manager, other than when I watch his team play in Germany, he invariably played with three at the back, and I'm not a massive fan of that shape.
Having said that, I think Fofana/Chalaboa, Colwill, Hato could be a solid three.
30 Apr 2026 10:15:42
The more time goes on, the less sure I am who I would choose as the next coach. Ideally, someone with a pedigree who would instil discipline in the squad. It would be great to see us play with intensity, but I am not sure we have the players in our squad to do so.
There is a lack of mentality in the squad: hopefully the new coach can change that.
30 Apr 2026 10:23:07
I have made reference before to the long list of managers, starting with Sarri, that have all mentioned players' mental weakness. I can see why they might have said that, but I also think it's a partial cover by an equally long list of poor managers.
30 Apr 2026 11:16:01
Tom, one of the skills of football management is to build a winning mentality.
30 Apr 2026 11:41:07
Spurs going down would even accept Arsenal winning both.
In reality, I think PSG win CL.
City win the prem.
Spurs or West Ham 50 50 for the drop.
Alonso would be an interesting choice and I wouldn't be upset with it.
30 Apr 2026 11:48:17
Tom,
I'm pretty sure we don't have the players at the club who played under Sarri, but I could be wrong.
30 Apr 2026 12:39:35
Bill, of course, we don't, and that's my point. It's been mentioned under two different ownerships, loads of managers, and lots of players.
I do understand why, as we seem to have had a succession of players who crumble under adversity, but I also think it's an excuse from a manager's play book.
30 Apr 2026 22:00:46
I would rather Arsenal win F*** all.
Have too many friends who support them.
29 Apr 2026 21:58:09
How can Ben White be considered for England?
30 Apr 2026 09:46:47
Because TT is the coach, Tom.
30 Apr 2026 11:19:34
Tbf, not a lot of options at RB apart from Reece. I presume he (White) is in the squad because he can play CB, where there is also a paucity of talent. Let's hope Reece and Levi are fit.
{Ed001's Note - and he is not going to pick Trent, no matter what kind of form he is in, due to Tommy Tuchel dating his ex and the pair fell out over it.}
30 Apr 2026 11:49:51
Levi won't go to the World Cup and maybe Reece won't either due to their injury issues.
30 Apr 2026 12:43:32
I think James is a certainty, but maybe a bit too soon for Colwill.
29 Apr 2026 19:14:31
Statistically Enzo has been our most creative player this season, whilst only Joao Pedro has carried more threat in front of goal.
I recently said, on here, that I wouldn’t lose too much sleep if we sold him, but is there more of an argument for building the team around him and making sure the new coach has a plan to deploy him in his best position/role?
29 Apr 2026 20:07:01
J,
I guess that only comes into the equation if he wants to stay with us.
29 Apr 2026 20:23:34
He wants a new contract. If not, he will be off.
29 Apr 2026 21:57:13
Tom,
I think he will demand such a high salary; we will have to sell him, which is a shame. However, we can trust our SDs to replace him with the same or better quality of player, maybe not.
30 Apr 2026 05:15:10
I'm not sure if players think like this, but I can't help but think, if I were developing in this squad, I'd be looking at the Fernandez situation with some concern. World Cup winner, one of the captains, statistically one of the best performers - I'd be asking the question: what hope is there for the rest of us if this guy doesn't get an improved contract?
Naturally, the request from Fernandez and his team needs to be realistic.
No point demanding 400-500k a week and then kicking off when the club declines those terms. But it's a bit of a tight line the club are walking on this one.
30 Apr 2026 09:04:41
Enzo Fernandez has freely admitted he loved playing for Maresca and attributed his arriving late in the box to finish chances to his 1 to 1 sessions with our former coach. I wouldn't be surprised to see Maresca build his midfield around him when he takes over at Man City.
30 Apr 2026 09:49:20
I'm sure RM or PSG might have something to say about Greenaway.
30 Apr 2026 10:11:06
If we cannot keep hold of EF, it doesn't bode well for us being EPL or Champions League challengers any time soon. Would be a further indictment, imho, of Vision 2030. The point is that if a CFC player, first contracted when pretty young on a relatively low, long-term contract, does very well and is on a level with some of the best in Europe, he will almost certainly want wages to improve significantly and be in alignment with what those clubs are giving similar players, or he will want to leave. If that player does not do well, then CFC has a player on their books on a long-term contract they may struggle to shift, and perhaps with a loss, not a profit.
But I do wonder what Caicedo's new contract has meant in terms of higher wages, though. Does anyone know? Certainly, this was for me a good sign, and I would hope that EF might settle for alignment with him - though, equally, he may want more. Then there is Pedro plus Cucurella; we would hope they will stay. And, frankly, Neto has been our only consistently decent standard of winger despite all the comings and goings of wide men in the last few seasons. So, would hope Neto will stay too.
30 Apr 2026 17:06:16
Depends on the choice of manager and the players he may need for his preferred style of play.
30 Apr 2026 19:01:39
Tom, the choice of manager may be limited. I'd be surprised if a top coach would want the job working under 5 stooges. I fear we will end up with Silva, a mediocre, mid-table coach, which just sums up our ambitions.
30 Apr 2026 21:42:43
Whoever takes the job will have their critics.
It seems to be common practice to have a dividing line between coaching and player recruitment. I'm sure whoever takes over as manager will have some input on signings.
29 Apr 2026 09:42:04
I watched the PSG v Bayern game last night and what a game, no faffing around passing across their own back lines, no continual back passes and when they got near the goal they had a shot! No worries about losing possession, what a refreshing watch it was and a huge upgrade on the total dross on offer in the Premier League.
Arsenal, with their horrible brand of boring football and Pep with his tippy tappy possession based nonsense have set the tone in this country and I sincerely hope it changes now. Bayern or PSG please to win the Champions League and maybe then styles will be copied.
29 Apr 2026 19:46:59
And that shows the gap between Premier League clubs and those teams. There is a chasm at the moment when a few years ago, Premier League teams were ahead.
30 Apr 2026 10:20:16
EPL sides do seem to have dropped off in the last couple of seasons. It may also be to do with the fact that the EPL is a much tougher league to play in than those on the continent, where too often just a few top clubs can usually count on beating almost every other side in the league. This would particularly apply to the German and French leagues, in which Bayern and PSG have almost all the money and are likely to win their leagues almost every season. So, top players will get less tired, they can revolve/rotate players more easily, and it seems as though, in the case of the French league, that PSG get given rests from their league games in between each two-legged match in the knockout stage of the Champions League.
One of the reasons, beyond Maresca getting our tactics spot on on the day, why we beat PSG in the final of the CWC was that we had had a far easier side of the draw in the knockout stages, not having to get past Bayern and Real Madrid. They had obviously also gone the whole way in the Champions League when winning it. In other words, they must have been a tad more tired perhaps than CFC, who could play a B team in the Conference League until its final, plus had that easier route to the CWC final.

I have never had my ticket for sale for so long on the ticket exchange. Mind you, it is a stupid KO time.
29 Apr 2026 09:29:56
Tom, I can't make Monday's game and have just put my ticket on the exchange.
Apparently there is a meeting on 6th May between the club and supporters regarding the club's updated ticketing policy. Leaving aside pricing, I wonder what that's all about. Probably not good news!
