The story I read this morning was Chelsea currently have 41 players in its squad. That number includes 4-5 young players who I understand do not have to be registered in our 25 player premiership squad. I can't see the homegrown rules being a problem but it looks to me as if we do need to focus on some sales.
The players I would sell or loan are Disasi, Tosin, Chalaboa, Badiashile, Delap, Guiu, Jorgensen and maybe Gusto. I assume we will all come up with different sales lists but it's all just fun.

Chalobah is a done deal. I don't want to see any loans from except for young players. I would add Jackson and Neto plus a few more.

Then there's the super fringe players, Slonina, Wiley, D.Fofana, Washington, who will likely be sold or loaned. Sarr & Anselmino will likely be going out on loan. Satpaev and Paez out on loan, too. That's like 17 exits, which would leave us with 24 players.

A few notes from the first half with Juventus. Obvious disclaimer of a preseason game, so can’t think too much.
If Sanchez is in goal for the start of the season, we 100% aren’t playing out from the back. If Wes in also in the 11, I’ll join up with you lot after changes are made. Jamie Gittens looks sharper, but still clearly a headless chicken. He ruins our press fairly consistently and allows teams to meander out from his flank. Thankfully we have Rogers as first choice, as can’t go another season wondering if Garnacho/Gittens/Neto will start on the left.
Some positives were Palestra seemed a little sharper. Better combinations and runs. Great to have Moises back controlling the middle and the youngster playing next to him will learn a lot. Quenda hasn’t offered much but I’m sure he will grow into the season. Joao has been our best attacking outlet but seems to play on a different frequency to those that started.

Haven't been able to see any of the game - though have heard it was ultimately won by a v good Juventus goal - so good to get your comments on the first half, Melbourne. What, apart from the Juventus goal, stood out for you in the second half? Any reasons for concern, or CFC players that impressed?

Stevo was the bright spark in that game; he looked very lively. Palestra is going to be a fantastic signing. Lavia is pure gold, and, as Tom says, will be our player of the season if he stays fit. Penders should have saved their goal for a man of his height.
Other than that, it was all a bit of the usual pre-season fitness training, with so many changes. A lot of fans out there, all wearing shirts, showing just how big our fanbase is.

We all see games differently. In my opinion, we looked ok, and had control for periods of the game, but we still look like a team reliant on "moments" rather than constant pressure.
I thought Gittens was ok and Palestra was also good.
Despite rumours coming out of Portugal, I can't see us signing Costa (unfortunately), so I think Sanchez will start as Alonso's No1.

Second half wasn't great, JBS. Estevao was good when he came on, Jackson was better than Welbeck, but was starting fights, as usual, and will always be a red card waiting to happen.
It felt like we had more of the ball, but created very little, and Juventus were decent on the break.
Yildiz looked amazing, as usual.
Overall, nothing to be worried about as we weren't close to full strength, so hard to judge a central defence that, hopefully, sees no minutes during the season. We do look very fragile on the break, which will need addressing as Caicedo can't do it on his own.

I put such little stock in this stage of pre season, other than getting mins in legs. Very few of the players who started will be starting our first EPL match, and mass substitutions also spoil any flow in the game.
In the last couple of pre season matches, you want to see the team looking more prepared and together.

Alonso has sent back Emenalo and others as not being good enough for the first team. Some, myself included, thought Emenalo might make it but deemed not ready just yet. He has kept Nicoll-Jazuli and Tayo Subuloye as the Only academy players.

EbW, I was certainly hoping Emanalo was going to be kept in the squad, as all the reports were that he was impressing the manager. He is young, and I'm sure he will feature in the future. Maybe another candidate for a loan. It might also have something to do with a potential new signing.

Starting to see loan deals materialising for the youth players too (Kavuma-McQueen is going Portsmouth, Walsh is linked to Wigan), which, when added to some World Cup players coming back, makes sense of why they'd be sent back.
Emenalo has talked about feeling he's progressed past youth football, which may well be true. Another one for whom a loan makes sense. I suspect he will make it, but right now Hato and Chavarria need to be integrated into Alonso's system.

Jackson to Spuds for £65 million. A loan fee last year of £15 million from Bayern. My maths says that is £80 million for a player who cost £30 million. These Yankee owners might not have a clue about soccer, but they know how to make money. £50 million profit.

EbW, I personally hope we don't sell him, but particularly not to the Spuds. My guess is I'm in a minority about selling him, but ho hum.
If we did sell him, I wouldn't sell him for less than the reported £65m.
I assume at some stage someone will produce a total nett spend number for our owners. I guess a book profit number isn't produced?

And, like has been said numerous times before, whilst all this talk of profit, book values and amortisations is good for Twitter, what really matters is what happens on the pitch.

I am very sad. I just asked the question on AI. Has any club in the history of football made a transfer profit on every trade? The answer was "no."
I also asked for the most profitable club from player transfers "this" century, and it said Benfica.
Don't blame me if that is wrong, blame AI.

Tom, not sure about AI's answers, but there is no doubt we are a very smart selling club; certainly recently in the PL. What is clear is that once again we start pre-season with an inflated squad. This causes problems for our managers, even more so without European football. No doubt we will move on a number of players, and, as you said, some posters would prefer to keep.
Personally, I agree with what most people describe as "untouchables" and won't worry about the rest, particularly if it provides us with funds to balance the books and strengthen in positions of weakness.

I think Bruno will end up playing his football in Liverpool, but you may well end up with the lad from Madrid and his wages.

I expect Arsenal pays higher wages than Chelsea nowadays, but would Chelsea owners be willing to pay more by way of a (amortised over many years!) purchase price?
BG is probably well worth going pretty high for - would be hugely helpful to CFC if Enzo F leaves - but the problem is that, at 28, the CFC amortisation route is not as attractive/sensible as with a younger player.
I still expect BG to end up being signed by Arsenal - and Vinicius Jr staying at Madrid. But still a lot of time to the end of the transfer window.

Pretty sure most Arsenal players are on higher wages. As far as I'm aware, it's only James and Fofana who are on above 200k/week. The likes of Palmer, Caicedo, Enzo, Pedro are all on 150-190k/week, I believe, not sure what we're paying Rogers yet. Arsenal, however, currently have 7 players above the 200k mark. One is Jesus, who I'd expect to leave, but Saka is on 300k, Havertz on like 280k. Saliba, Rice, Odegaard, Gyokeres are all 200k+. Even Madueke is on 150k, whereas he was on a modest £50k/week at Chelsea before he left for you guys.
As for competing for Scott, I think you'll sign Bruno G, it just seems sort of inevitable. Not sure we go for him despite the rumoured bid a few weeks ago, unless we sell Enzo. Don't see how you sign Vini Jr with his wage demands. He wants something like EUR30m net a year, which would be around EUR60m or £51m/year, which is roughly £900k/week to sign a new deal at Madrid. Granted they receive 50% of his image rights, so perhaps a deal could be done if you guys don't take a slice of that pie. But still think he'd be wanting around the £400-500k/week.

If only, indeed, Tom. The Athletic, 4 August, reported in a detailed article on EPL transfers that 'reports of their [Chelsea] links with Costa are being downplayed'. Make that what you will. So, it looks like Sanchez v Penders for No. 1 spot, while the NYT says it will be Slonina v Sharman-Lowe for 3rd GK spot.

A few outgoings at centre half. In some ways sad to see Trevor go but in my opinion he was not top draw. Badiashile on the way to Napoli probably and Disasi will also go.
Colwill and Lacroix will probably be our starters with Fofana and Acheampong in reserve, probably an upgrade on last year but wouldn't want a long term injury to Colwill again.

Seymns, Badiashile is only a loan. I don't know why we let these Italian clubs get away with it. Still, he is off our books for a season. As for Disasi, apparently West Ham really want him, but he wants a PL club - some hope, but who knows.

I'm hoping that if Badiashile is going out on loan to Napoli or any other club that (a) it's a significant loan fee, (b) prefer obligation, (c) if not obligation, then achievable playing targets.
Apparently there is sort of back up deal for Disasi with the Happy Hammers, but now Palace are sniffing around, and I'm not sure how that works for Palace.

Yeah, not sure Palace will want to lose their profit off of Lacroix (in terms of SCR) by buying Disasi. Wouldn't matter on our end, as we'd probably not make much of a profit, if at all.
Could potentially do a Garnacho-type deal with Palace, but I think we've come up with some sort of creative deal with West Ham, where if they don't get promoted he signs him back.

We've enquired about Scalvini from Atalanta too. Apparently we're keen to add another CB, but surely that would mean another CB joining Disasi, Badiashille and Chalobah out of the exit door. I think the club would like that to be Fofana, but there's no serious market for him. Tosin is more likely to be the other one.

Bill, I can't remember him ever letting us down as a player and he could have easily turned his back on us when we mucked him about.

Good professional - sadly, just not good enough for the top end of this league. That goal conceded against Sunderland, where he stepped in quicksand, is my lasting memory of him.

Who starts in midfield alongside Caicedo?
Lavia, if he is fit, would be a brilliant pairing, but he is never fit.
Essugo is more of a Caicedo replacement.
Henderson is a perfect fit, but can he play week in, week out?
Enzo is more likely to play further forward if he stays.
Valentin Barco looks a fantastic little livewire of a player, but maybe needs time to adapt.
Reece James might just be the answer, with Barco and Henderson as back up, and Essugo deputising for Caicedo when needed. I'm sure the boss man has it covered.

I know we haven't locked like it, but I'm still hoping we got 3 at the back, and then Reece joins Caicedo in the centre. I want Enzo to stay, but I'm a 2 man midfield. I don't think he's mobile enough, and he leaves Caicedo with too much to do.
Likewise, I don't think James has it in him to play wingback without getting injured, so playing him next to Caicedo, I think, works perfectly.

Reece is a top class right back and can play in other positions, but unfortunately in those he is bang average. Even if Enzo stays, we don't have any great depth in midfield. If Lavia ever lasts for 90 minutes for 10 games, I might revisit my opinion. If Enzo goes, we will have to splash the cash on a proven performer.
