Hi ed001 I love your insight into the game and opinions on players.

Could I ask you what you think our best team is for remainder of the season and why.

If you have chance of cause.

{Ed001's Note - obviously this is saying all the players in the squad are fit and in form:
Kepa in goal (not convinced by him and his weak wrists but I don't rate Cabellero at all)

James at right-back
Zouma and Christensen at centre-back
Emerson, simply because he provides better balance on the left

Kante and Kovacic in the centre with Kante given freedom to play where he feels is best rather than constrained to the right
Loftus-Cheek in front but I doubt if he will last a full 90 so Mount will be the chosen replacement. I like Mount but Loftus-Cheek is a special talent if only he can sort out his back

Willian on the right. A fresh and fit Willian can be brilliant and his experience will be important
Pulisic on the left. He has only shown flashes of how good he is but he is brilliant on a good day

Giroud up front. His experience is important but also he is a top class player when it comes to leading a line and bringing others into play.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I think with Giroud on top and Pulisic and Willian on the wings and - preferably - RLC behind, we would be very strong offensive. At least if RLC is anywhere near his levels last season, Giroud's hold up play would be fantastic into RLC's offensive abilities! Also we'd have a lot of physical presence with the two of those!

Just taking the signing of Zeyech and potential Werner signing into consideration Ed, do you see much of a change in tactics for next season?

I think with Ziyech playing more of an inside role on the right, and James overlapping, Kante won't have to venture over to the right as much. In games where we'd expect us to win and boss possession I see us playing almost as a 4-2-4. Kante and one other playing centrally with Pulisic (or CHO) on the left, Werner playing off either Giroud or Abraham and Ziyech on the right.

In games where possession would be more contested you could sacrifice one of the attacking four and bring in another body for the midfield - change to a 4-3-3.

{Ed001's Note - you don't think Werner will play either in place or Giroud or on the left then? He does tend to play from the left whenever I see him. I do think that it would be better if you do put him as playing off Giroud though. Maybe it is just me that rates Giroud, but I think he is a key player, even if he is not scoring, similar to Firmino at Liverpool. They knit the attacks together and are key in the way the team works space.}

His record as a lone striker isn't as good as playing in a pair, I think he's at his best playing off (not sure if this is the right name but) Poulson at RBL.

I think if we line up in a 4-3-3 then you'll see him playing from the left. Him cutting in from that side and Ziyech doing the same from the right should give defences a few headaches. Especially if we have a competent attacking lb to complement James on the right.

What Giroud does is a skill, and he's one of the best at it. I think he'll be very important to Werner working. Holding the ball up or flicking it on, but mainly pulling the CB's out to create space for Werner to run into. These are the aspects of Abraham's game that he has to learn from Giroud, if he can then we have a potentially very lethal partnership for the future in him and Werner.

think Giroud makes our defending at corners much better. As u say very experienced and clever player.

Thanks for that ed I agree with you although I really want to see odoi and abraham succeed.

So with the signing of ziyech and possibly werner how would you setup?

{Ed001's Note - Odoi needs to shape up his attitude and I just don't see Abraham as ever being quite good enough, a bit like Batshuayi. The changes I would make with Ziyech and Werner are to put Ziyech in place of Willian and Werner in place of Loftus-Cheek. Obviously it would leave more gaps in midfield with Werner playing further forward, but you have Kante and he is immense when he has to cover gaps. Added to that Giroud is very responsible and Werner is excellent at the high press.}

Think I have to disagree with you there Ed. If he could just stay fit Ruben is our best player in my opinion, the guy can do it all going forward and with Kante and Kovacic I’m the midfield with him hi defensive deficiencies can be mitigated. It’s all opinions though, right! I think it’s a headache for Frank next season but the best type of headache.

{Ed001's Note - it's not that I disagree with you on his quality, but he is never going to be fit for an extended period is he? It just doesn't look like he can ever be fit with his back problems.}

I agree about Tammy. That’s why I thought dembele made a lot of sense, seems to be an upgrade, dembele runs channels well and hold up play good, todays rumours are wet ham / Newcastle for Michy, that would top of a good few days transfer wise.

Makes you worry for these young lads really.

As the only one you would look at and say he has a consistent first team place is reece james.

I hope we are all wrong and they all play.

But that's just my opinion.

{Ed001's Note - it is always difficult for the youngsters to break through at top teams.}

07 Jun 2020 18:37:43
i also think that the younger guys still have 2 seasons to mature 23-25
Tammy Mason Hudson need to be around the first team and need to keep their heads down and work hard. Success does not come easy and some earn more money than they are worth cause of the potential that they could reach but often dont. That is for me a problem today.

Ed001, is the way we manage and plan for the next few years a good way of running a club? . Also would love to know your thoughts on giving the upcoming talent big money . as to leting them go early?

{Ed001's Note - I don't like loans. It is just not to my liking. I don't think clubs should have these huge squads as it is taking away the potential of the youngsters to properly develop in a smaller team. On top of that it is altering the competitiveness of the leagues when they do get loaned out. There are very few players that actually benefit from being out on loan, they would benefit far more by leaving and playing regularly in League One or Two with their career depending on how they perform. Chelsea do about as well as is possible through it, but it is a broken system they are employing. I don't agree with giving big money either. Not until they earn it. Better letting them go and buying them back, as the experience they gain improves them. There are so few players that keep the desire and hunger once given the big money young.}

Mount Tammy RLC tomori could all be very very good squad players and in teams pushing on multiple fronts would be needed, we spent millions on Bakyoko drinkwater etc when we now have a squad just missing a world class touch,

07 Jun 2020 20:36:39
I get why people are concerned about Tammy being the long term option in that role, but I think he deserves another season to earn that shot. He will score goals, it's the rest of his game that improvement needs to be seen.

Our attacking options are much better for next season already, we'll certainly know by next summer if that's somewhere we need to improve.
