How would you guys like us to approach the game tomorrow? and will it be the same 3-4-3?
Offensively with e. g. Pulisic, Mount, Werner, Callum in same line-up
Or more defensive, with James and Alonso as WBs and compact in mid with Jovacic, Kante and Mount as a midfield and then maybe Giroud up top? So many question marks I think.

With the pace on the break of Suarez and Joao Felix I will be really worried about Jovacic's and Alonso's lack of pace if selected.

4-1-4-1. Mendy, Azpi, Silva, Kurt, Rudiger : Kante: James, Kova, Jorginho, Mount: Giroud or Abraham? either or? A team to play possession without too much intent, try for set piece situations. I think the challenge will be the 2nd leg, when Chelsea may need or be obliged to make the running, be more expansive then Werner, Havertz, CHO, Pulisic, Alonso all these guys will have to be used considered.

Silva and Abraham both out injured so I like your team, TomB.
Athletico do not really pose a threat aerially (don't think Dembele is available) so I would rather see Chilwell for Alonso - but I don't think that will happen.

The only time Chelsea has beat Athletico Madrid was when we used the 3-4-3 formation under Antonio Conte, I strongly think 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 will still serve us best against Athletico Madrid this time.

I would not pick chilwell over Alonso. Alonso offer something chilwell can't . threat on set pieces and can has knack for poaching important goals. He's more experienced and better composed and better on the ball. Just not as fast as chilwell but he has other things to make up for his lack of pace like positioning. chilwell is not even solid in defending. he's no Joe Ashley Cole.

Alonso. slows down play.
Alonso. is slow in general
Alonso. poor one on one defender
Alonso. slow to get back and defend
Alonso. average in the air
Alonso. poor penalty box awareness (not as bad as Rudiger)
Alonso. not bad at free kicks
Alonso. not bad at in opposing penalty box
As you can see, I am biased and I do have an agenda. I just admit it.

I'm with you Tom, Alonso is a terrible footballer at this level, who happens to pop up with the odd goal. He can't defend, his positioning is woeful, he can't cross, 99% of the time he knocks it back to Rudiger and slows play down - when in good offensive positions.

Double checked a few and see his name. Apologies, it worry is we won’t get slot of chances so when we do we need to be clinical, the pass and the finish, 2 things we struggle with.

P. S: last time we played with Rudi, Dave, AC and Alonso in the defence in the CL was against Barcelona and you know what happend.
